Dark Matter has more plans to explore the multiverse.
The Apple TV+ series follows Jason Dessen, a physics professor played by Joel Edgerton, who is suddenly switched with a version of himself from a different universe. He then has to navigate the vast multiverse in an attempt to return to his own life. The first season covered the entire plot of Blake Crouch’s popular novel, Dark Matter, but the show has been renewed for a second season which will tell an entirely new story, diverging from the book.
I recently learned from an interview with ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con that there’s been some real movement regarding Dark Matter. Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, one of the show’s producers, revealed they didn’t just talk about a season 3 – they actually had plans for it! Apparently, when Apple TV greenlit season 2, the pitch included an intention to continue with a third and final season. Here’s what she had to say…
When we presented the second season to Apple and worked to get it approved, we actually planned the entire show as a three-season arc. We envision it as a trilogy, and it would be fantastic to have the chance to conclude the story on our own terms, with a satisfying and complete ending. We’re really hoping that happens, but we’re also thrilled for fans to experience season two – we think they’re going to love it!
Season 2 of Dark Matter arrives on Apple TV on August 28th, and viewers already know the show is likely to continue beyond that. While Season 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, Apple TV+ seems open to making it happen, as they originally approved Season 2 with the possibility of future seasons in mind. This means Season 2 doesn’t have to resolve everything, giving the story room to breathe.
The cast of Dark Matter includes Joel Edgerton, who plays different versions of the character Jason, alongside Jennifer Connelly as Daniela, Oakes Fegley as Charlie, Alice Braga as Amanda, Jimmi Simpson as Ryan, Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton, Amanda Brugel as Blaire, and Aina Brei’yon as Dawn. Throughout the first season, viewers see alternate versions of these characters as Jason travels through different universes, trying to get back to the one where someone has stolen his identity.
The first season of Dark Matter concludes with Jason, Daniela, and Charlie finding each other and stepping into a new reality where they can begin again. Meanwhile, in another universe, Ryan and Amanda cross paths, and we see alternate versions of Leighton, Blaire, and Dawn existing throughout the multiverse. The upcoming second season will continue these storylines and explore them in greater depth, with plans already in place for a potential third season.
Brugel, who plays Blaire, will be a series regular starting in season 2. Joining the show is Chris Diamantopoulos, known for his role in Invincible, though details about his character are currently being kept secret.
Apple TV decided to renew Dark Matter for a second season thanks to strong initial viewership and generally favorable reviews. The show currently holds an 81% rating from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Alex Harrison of ScreenRant highlighted the consistently strong acting, particularly praising Joel Edgerton’s performance in his dual roles as something truly special.
Blake Crouch, who wrote Dark Matter, not only created the TV series but also served as an executive producer and wrote every episode of the first season with Ben-Zekry. David Edgerton is another executive producer on the show, along with Matt Tolmach – known for his work on films like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Dark Matter season 2 premieres on Apple TV on August 28.
