Apple TV+ is raising its subscription price by 30%

On Thursday, Apple announced that the monthly subscription fee for Apple TV+, where shows like “The Studio” and “Ted Lasso” are streamed, will increase by three dollars, now costing $12.99 per month.

The action is being taken since numerous broadcasters have recently hiked their fees due to a rise in production costs and the need for these companies to meet higher profit expectations set by their investors.

In 2019, Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV+, was introduced at an affordable monthly rate of $4.99. Positioned as a cost-effective bonus for users owning Apple devices like iPhones and iPads, it offered high-quality movies and shows. A complimentary trial was provided with these purchases. However, over the years, including in October 2023, the service has seen an increase in its subscription fee, which has risen from $6.99 to $9.99.

The streaming service, Apple TV+, has received high praise for series such as “Severance” and “The Studio.” However, it’s still relatively smaller in comparison to numerous other streaming platforms on the market.

As a movie buff and an ardent lover of Apple products, I can’t help but feel the tension between this tech giant and the Trump administration. Early this year, the prospect of heightened tariffs from the White House had analysts and me worrying about potential repercussions for Apple’s iPhone business – a significant portion of which is manufactured in China.

Ever since that point, Apple has reinforced its dedication towards American manufacturing, with a recent promise of investing an extra $100 billion into U.S. based manufacturing efforts.

If Apple’s core businesses like the iPhone continue to experience intense competition, it might lead the company to explore less profitable areas of their operations, according to analysts.

In March, according to a report by tech and business news site The Information, it was revealed that Apple TV+ has been experiencing substantial financial losses. For some time now, analysts have perceived Apple TV+ as an extension of Apple’s broader efforts to expand into service offerings complementing their hardware.

Apple hasn’t provided an immediate response regarding our query for comments. Notably, the streaming service falls under Apple’s broader category of services, which generated a revenue of $27.4 billion during its third fiscal quarter – marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year.

Business

President Trump has criticized Apple for manufacturing iPhones outside of the United States.

Different from many prominent streaming services, Apple TV+ doesn’t provide a version that includes advertisements.
