Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter, Apple, recently performed a surprise concert at Cannery Hall in Nashville, and her musical debut has received some criticism.
Videos from Friday’s performance quickly spread online, and many people commented negatively about the performer’s singing. Critics pointed out that she doesn’t seem to have inherited the musical talent of her famous father, Chris from Coldplay.
The 21-year-old, who hopes to become a model and singer, performed with the musical duo Jade Street before releasing a song with them called ‘Satellite’. Unfortunately, listeners compared her singing to amateur karaoke and felt it didn’t measure up to her famous father’s abilities.
TikTok users reacted strongly to the performance, with many commenting on the influence of nepotism. Common sentiments included frustration with ‘nepotism babies’ and a desire to see more opportunities for artists without family connections. People expressed being tired of seeing the children of famous individuals succeed based on their parents’ status.
People loved the video when she posted it on Instagram, but viewers on TikTok were much more critical.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, and Chris Martin, 48, were married for thirteen years, from 2003 to 2016, and share two children: Apple and her brother, Moses, who is 19 and pursuing a career in music.
Chris Martin and his band, Coldplay, have won seven Grammy Awards and nine Brit Awards, selling over 160 million records globally. Chris’s mother is also a talented singer, having performed in the films Duets, Country Strong, and Infamous.
Many people are claiming Apple showed favoritism when choosing who would perform ‘Satellite,’ which is scheduled to be released on October 28th.
The model looked stunning on stage in a white crop top, a black mini skirt, and knee-high boots, but unfortunately, her singing didn’t quite live up to her fashionable appearance.
People on TikTok reacted negatively to the singer’s performance, with comments ranging from calling it ‘really bad’ to suggesting she stick to activities her father excels at. Many attributed her opportunity to nepotism and joked about inherited talent (or lack thereof), comparing her to her mother and lamenting the impact of privilege on the arts.
It’s disappointing to see this person given an opportunity they don’t seem to deserve. It’s clear they’re benefiting from family connections, and frankly, I don’t support that. Let’s just say their singing isn’t impressive, and this whole situation is a bit much. Apple isn’t going to get away with this.
I can’t believe this is happening. I’m really lost for words… I briefly thought things might turn around. Is she even a good actress? It’s clearly just because of who she knows. Ouch. And she definitely can’t sing.
Let’s be honest, she really can’t sing. It’s just not a strong suit. It makes you wonder how she got this opportunity – it feels like it’s based on who she knows, not her talent, and frankly, it’s getting old.
It’s surprising and a little concerning that her voice still sounds this way, especially considering she probably has access to the best vocal training available.
‘Nepotism at its finest… Apple fell really far from the tree’.

People on Instagram commented that her singing sounded like someone doing karaoke after having too much to drink. Some even compared her vocals to the famously off-key singing scene with Renée Zellweger in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary.
People continued commenting, joking that the singer sounds the same as someone after a few drinks at karaoke. Many felt she should let her father do the singing, pointing out that having connections helps people with average talent get noticed.
Honestly, I’ve heard middle schoolers sing better. It reminded me of that scene in Bridget Jones’s Diary – you know, the one where she sings? It was really off-key.
It’s a familiar scene: after a few drinks at karaoke, everyone thinks they’re a star… perhaps it’s best to stop after a while. Let’s just say she’s not a gifted singer. And then there’s the issue of parents who avoid being truthful with their children to spare them hurt feelings.
However, comments on her Instagram page – also shared by Jade Street – were overwhelmingly positive, with people writing things like ‘Gorgeous voice!!’, ‘You sound heavenly’, and ‘You sound amazing’. One commenter even joked, ‘She’s the female Chris Martin – I don’t need to switch teams now!’

Wow, Apple’s new voice assistant sounds fantastic! It’s a female voice, and I’m really impressed – it’s beautiful and hauntingly lovely. I’m so glad I don’t have to change my preferred voice settings!
The model is a student at Vanderbilt University, where she’s majoring in law, history, and society, as she shared with Interview magazine earlier in the year.
She’s also enjoying acting as a hobby, and is currently performing with the Vanderbilt Original Cast, a well-regarded cabaret group.
This semester’s musical is a hilarious parody of the show Love Island, called Love on an Island. It’s really enjoyable, and the songs are fantastic!
In an interview last April, she explained that because she has a naturally deep voice, when the group sings harmonies, it often sounds like it’s just the male members and her – she jokingly referred to herself as ‘Apple’ in that context.
I’m really enjoying singing my favorite song this semester. I know I’m not the strongest singer in the group, but I’m having a great time.
