Apex Legends Steam player numbers drops to lowest level in years

As a die-hard Apex Legends fan who’s been with the game since its launch, it’s tough not to feel a pang of nostalgia as I see these dwindling player numbers. It seems like just yesterday we were all battling it out on Kings Canyon, and now the battlefield feels eerily quiet.

Player numbers continue to fall for Apex Legends.

The number of Apex Legends players on Steam has recently hit a three-year low, averaging approximately 110,000 players daily. This figure was last seen way back in January 2021.

This dip in player numbers is part of a prolonged pattern that began in 2023. Despite numerous significant updates to Apex Legends throughout the year, it has consistently faced challenges with attracting players. Even new seasons have had minimal impact on increasing the number of players. In contrast to previous years, these updates would typically lead to substantial increases in player counts.

As a gaming enthusiast, it’s important to note that these statistics I’m seeing only represent Steam users. This doesn’t include the whole PC gaming community because gamers on platforms like EA App, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch aren’t factored into these numbers. So, when we talk about player bases based on these figures, we’re only scratching the surface of the broader picture.

Apex player numbers continue to drop

Since March 2023, Apex Legends has been on a consistent downward trajectory. However, it’s important to note that in February 2023, the game saw a significant boost with the release of Season 16, the introduction of the Nemesis Burst AR, and a new Legend Class system. This update led to a record-breaking monthly average of players reaching 257,418 and a peak player count of an impressive 624,437.

come September 2024, I found myself among an average of approximately 116,747 gaming enthusiasts, with a record-breaking high of 265,369 at one point. However, by July, there was a noticeable dip on all fronts – a drop that was quite substantial according to the stats. But August showed a slight uptick, thanks to the much-anticipated launch of Season 22.

Presently, the number of players has been consistently decreasing. Over the past month, the average daily player count stands at approximately 109,516, peaking at 254,972. These downward trends are continuing, and it’s unclear what the final numbers for September will be as they appear to be still declining.

Is Apex Legends dying?

The persistent drop in Apex players is causing concern for both Respawn and EA. Over the past year, significant alterations such as crossplay, a fresh map, innovative mechanics, and novel game modes have been introduced to Apex. Regrettably, these changes have failed to retain or even maintain the player population on Steam.

In summary, there’s no information about the number of players on Consoles or EA App for Apex Legends. If the player base remains consistent, then it’s not as concerning as it may appear. However, a decrease in players is always undesirable for any game. Given this situation, what measures could Respawn and EA take to attract more players back to Apex Legends?
