Apex Legends battle pass changes reversed (partly) after fan uproar

As a dedicated fan of Apex Legends with countless hours invested into the game, I was utterly dismayed when Respawn announced its new battle pass structure. The prospect of no longer being able to purchase the next battle pass with my earned in-game currency felt like a slap in the face, especially after reviewing the overwhelmingly negative player feedback.

Responding to strong criticism from players, Apex Legends’ creator Respawn Entertainment has abandoned their proposal to allow purchasing the battle pass solely with real money.

Around mid-July, the developer unveiled plans for a revamped battle pass system, effective with the commencement of season 22. This new arrangement called for a fresh battle pass every half-season instead of per season. Moreover, Respawn opted to eliminate the purchase option using 950 Apex Coins (the game’s premium currency). The new price point was set at $9.99.

The latest update caused significant frustration among players. While Apex Coins, which have a value of around $10 for 950 coins, can be purchased with real money, they could also be earned within the game. Previously, players had enough Apex Coins from one battle pass to buy the next one. However, this practice was altered, leading to an outpouring of negative reviews on Steam. In the past month, more than 75,000 negative reviews have been submitted.

In their recent update on X, Respawn expressed, “We’ve taken in what you’ve shared with us.” Starting from Season 22, they will once again offer the option to purchase the Premium Battle Pass for 950 Apex Coins. Recognizing our missteps, we accept full responsibility for mishandling the Battle Pass modifications.

To make amends, Respawn announced that they would render the initial part of season 22’s battle pass essentially complimentary. Players could acquire it by finishing a set of uncomplicated in-game missions instead of having to pay. Furthermore, starting from mid-season 22, players would be able to accrue sufficient Apex Coins from a single pass to purchase the succeeding one.

Respawn made no change to their plan to offer two battle passes each season, resulting in twice as many rewards for players, but also doubling the price. They maintained the premium Ultimate+ battle pass as a $19.99 real-money purchase. The company released an infographic explaining the updated battle pass layout.

Based on my personal experience as a graphic designer, I believe that providing a more detailed breakdown of what each track includes is a valuable update for any infographic. As someone who has spent countless hours creating and refining visual representations of data, I can attest to the importance of clarity and accuracy in conveying complex information. By offering a more intricate analysis of what’s included in each track, the audience will have a deeper understanding of the content and be able to engage with it on a more meaningful level. This not only enhances their learning experience but also increases the effectiveness of the infographic as a communication tool. Overall, I strongly support this update and believe that it will greatly benefit both the creator and the viewer.

Moving ahead, we understand that we must improve our communication with you by being more prompt, open, and reliable. Respawn acknowledged this need and promised progress on other concerns, such as dealing with cheaters, enhancing game stability, and implementing quality-of-life improvements. “We recognize that we can do better,” the studio stated.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m excitedly looking forward to the arrival of Season 22 on Aug. 6. And here’s the best part: Respawn assured us that they’ll be releasing the first batch of fixes together with it! Can’t wait to jump back into the game with improved features and smoother gameplay.
