Anya Taylor-Joy’s upcoming Netflix series, How to Kill Your Family, is moving forward after a copyright issue was resolved. The show, based on Bella Mackie’s 2021 novel, stars Taylor-Joy as Grace Bernard, a woman determined to get revenge on her wealthy and unforgiving family following a painful betrayal.
I just read on Deadline that StudioCanal and Netflix have settled their copyright disagreement over How to Kill Your Family. Apparently, StudioCanal sued the author of the book the series is based on, Bella Mackie, claiming her story borrowed too heavily from their classic 1949 film, Kind Hearts and Coronets. They were originally trying to get an injunction to stop Netflix, but it looks like they’ve reached a resolution.

The 1949 movie, featuring Alec Guinness, centers on a distant relative of a Duke who plans to kill the eight people ahead of him in line for the title, so he can become Duke himself. While author Mackie hasn’t stated that this film inspired her work, many critics have noted similarities between her 2021 novel and the movie. The film’s story was originally based on the 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal by Roy Horniman.
StudioCanal claims in court documents that the film How to Kill Your Family illegally copied significant portions of the classic movie Kind Hearts and Coronets. They are asking the court for financial compensation and a legal order to stop the filmmaker, Mackie, from continuing to use their work, particularly in the planned Netflix series.
The disagreement has been worked out, but the details of the agreement aren’t being shared. StudioCanal didn’t offer any additional information, but they did confirm the issue is resolved and filming for the Netflix series should start next year.

Now that the legal issues are settled, Anya Taylor-Joy is returning to Netflix with the series How to Kill Your Family. This will be her first Netflix project since the acclaimed 2020 series The Queen’s Gambit, which brought her international fame and earned her a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and an Emmy nomination. She’s also starring in Lucky, a new series for Apple TV+ that finished filming in July 2025.
