Anthony Callea surprised his fans by sharing a new gym selfie showing off a significantly changed and muscular physique.
The 43-year-old singer looked much different than he did when he first appeared on Australian Idol, showing off his fit physique with toned arms and legs during a workout in Melbourne.
Sharing the image with his followers, Anthony joked about the aftermath of an intense leg session.
‘Feeling your legs the next day is overrated,’ he wrote.
I’m so exhausted, I might not even be able to get out of bed tomorrow. I’d much prefer Tim bring me a vodka first thing in the morning instead of coffee.
Anthony took a selfie in the mirror while sitting on a cushioned bench. He leaned forward and looked directly at the camera with his phone.
He also showed off a closely shaved haircut and a deeply bronzed complexion.
The singer showed off his muscular arms and shoulders while wearing a white tank top with a striking design.
He paired the look with short, striped gym shorts that highlighted his muscular legs.
The post gained a lot of attention quickly, receiving hundreds of likes and enthusiastic comments from fans who admired his hard work and incredible change.
‘OMG you look different!’ one fan wrote, as a second commented: ‘Quite the glow up’.
Anthony gained attention when he shared the upsetting story of how Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson tried to reveal his sexuality on the second season of Australian Idol in 2004.
In his memoir, Behind The Voice, he stated that the judge involved in the controversy asked him to publicly come out on television.
The singer claimed that Dicko, age 60, was more focused on his personal life than he was, and even attempted to publicly reveal his sexuality for entertainment on the show.
Anthony recalls that after one of his performances, a judge named Dicko described his likely audience as “grannies, girls, and gays.” Anthony interpreted this as Dicko’s way of mentioning gay people, along with other groups.
He added that Dicko didn’t achieve his goal, even though he actively tried to spread the rumors that were going around.
Even though things were awkward, Anthony said he got a lot of support from the other contestants, judges, and crew on the show, which helped him not dwell on the negative comments from Dicko.
Okay, so it’s been almost twenty years, and I’m still reeling, but Anthony Callea finally said he forgives Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson! Can you believe it? He actually thinks Dicko meant well, that he had ‘right intentions’ even after everything! I’m honestly shocked, but also… maybe a little relieved for Anthony. It’s amazing he can be so gracious after all this time. I just… I’m so invested in this whole story!
He acknowledged that things were different back then, and looking back, his actions weren’t unusual for the time, he explained.
He continued to offer helpful feedback, and I generally agreed with it, even though it sometimes seemed influenced by the dramatic nature of the show itself.
In 2021, a former Australian Idol judge discussed Anthony’s sexuality on the TV Reload podcast, sharing a slightly different perspective on the topic from when Anthony was a contestant on the show.
He said he offered to help Anthony, then 21, conceal his sexuality, even though the musician maintained he wasn’t gay.
