Another Simple Favor Ending: Secret Twins, Wild Murders, and a Cliffhanger That Changes Everything

The much-anticipated follow-up to the 2018 hit “A Simple Favor”, titled “Another Simple Favor“, is now available on Prime Video. As its title suggests, it’s every bit as twisted as we expected! The stellar cast returns with Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, and Henry Golding, while the directorial helm is once again held by Paul Feig. This time around, we have some new additions to the roster, including Academy Award-winning actress Allison Janney, popular Netflix star Michele Morrone, and veteran stage performer Alex Newell.

The movie “Another Simple Favor” is overflowing with as much chaos as its predecessor, if not more. It’s packed with betrayals, both front and back, incestuous relationships, mommy vlogging, secret twins, and power suits galore. Following the plot of “Another Simple Favor” can be quite a challenge at times. So, who was the killer in this version? How many “Emily” characters are there? And what does that suspenseful ending hint at?

What Happens in ‘Another Simple Favor’?

To fully understand the first movie on its own merit, it’s best to familiarize yourself with it before moving on to the sequel. In Another Simple Favor, Stephanie (played by Kendrick) starts off in her usual format for her popular mommy vlog, but this time she’s in Capri, Italy, under house arrest. She implores her viewers to trust that she didn’t murder Emily’s husband. The narrative then takes a step back to show us how we ended up in such a predicament (cue the record scratch and freeze-frame).

Previously, Stephanie was gearing up to dispatch her son Miles to summer camp, and had gone offline post the occurrences depicted in “A Simple Favor.” She is on the verge of publishing a true-crime book based on her encounters with Emily (Lively). However, those close to her are perplexed by her reluctance to use her social media presence for promotional purposes.

Unexpectedly, there I was, making an appearance at a local bookstore event, fresh out of prison, Emily by my side. In the most surprising twist, she asked me to be her maid of honor at her upcoming wedding in Capri with this dashing Italian entrepreneur. At first, I was taken aback, given our past history and all, but then, with thoughts of book promotion and vlogging opportunities swirling, I found myself agreeing – bringing my new assistant Vicky along as a kind of insurance policy (Alex Newell).

Naturally, This Was a Bad Idea

It doesn’t take long for Stephanie to understand that there is more at stake than just a wedding between Emily and her boyfriend, Dante (Michele Morrone). It appears that Dante belongs to the Italian mob, which seems to be in the midst of a full-blown gang war. As a result, both Emily and Stephanie find themselves having to confront Dante’s mother, Portia (Elena Sofia Ricci), who is not at all pleased with the match.

At Portia’s invitation, Emily’s less-than-friendly mother (a humorous nod to Jean Smart from the initial film) and her aunt Linda (Allison Janney) make an appearance, causing Emily quite a bit of discomfort. To add fuel to the fire, Emily’s former spouse, Sean (Henry Golding), is compelled to attend with their son, Nicky. During the event, Sean gets drunk and hurls insults at Emily and Dante. Regrettably, it doesn’t take long for him to meet a violent end in the shower.

Regardless of the unresolved crime, the wedding proceeds. Shortly after Emily and Dante exchange their vows, Dante dramatically burns their prenuptial agreement. This action is swiftly followed by Dante being fatally shot. With no witnesses, Stephanie becomes the prime suspect. We have now returned to square one, with Stephanie under house arrest in her hotel room for a crime she did not carry out.

In my account, I managed to slip past house arrest with a clever bribe to the housekeeper, who helped me make an escape. Once out, I traced my way to Emily’s mother’s room, where I found her in a drunken haze. Under the influence of alcohol, she confided in me that Charity, the McLinden sister thought dead in the first film, was actually alive and had been raised secretly by their Aunt Linda. In essence, Aunt Linda kidnapped Charity when she was young and kept her hidden away, much like Rapunzel locked up in her tower.

In due course, Linda has devised a plan where she manipulates Charity into committing murder – specifically targeting Sean and Dante. The objective being to seize the wealth that would have been safeguarded by the prenuptial agreement once they were eliminated. However, as events unfold, Stephanie is apprehended once more by Portia. In a surprising turn of events, the genuine Emily rescues her just in time before it’s too late.

We’re Seeing Double Again

Once again, Stephanie and Emily find themselves face-to-face. Emily confides that at some point on Capri, Charity approached her, accused their Aunt of abuse, drugged Emily, and took on her identity. In a surprising twist, Emily seals the moment with a kiss to Stephanie. This action seems to alleviate some tension, and Emily then discloses a shocking secret: She had married Dante as a cover, for Dante was secretly involved in a passionate romance with his rival mob boss, Matteo. However, Charity’s actions aren’t over yet. She sends a chilling video message to Nicky, causing Emily and Stephanie to take action and confront the situation together.

On the edge of a precipice, Emily, Stephanie, Linda, and Charity stand confrontationally for the first time. In an unsettling display of ingenuity, Emily manages to make Charity turn against Linda by kissing her sister (quite obviously). Charity fires at Linda, who subsequently plunges off the cliff in a dramatic fall. Later, Charity contemplates killing Stephanie, but Emily persuades her otherwise, suggesting a more intricate scheme instead.

It All Comes Down to Motherhood (and a Possible Trilogy?)

We skip ahead in the story to reveal that the strategy was to create an illusion that Emily had been jailed for each of the murders. Meanwhile, Stephanie carries on with her mommy vlog and looks after Miles. Suddenly, she gets a call from the mysterious Emily, who asks for another small favor. On this occasion, Emily explicitly requests if Stephanie wouldn’t mind taking care of Nicky while she is away. Given that Sean is absent and Emily is evading authorities, it seems only logical for her to ask this. Naturally, Stephanie consents.

Despite the peculiarities, sensuality, harmful aspects, and uncertainties characterizing Emily and Stephanie’s relationship, they have always been bonded by their shared experience of motherhood. In essence, their mutual understanding stems from the fact that they both understand the lengths one can go for their child. Consequently, it seems fitting that this deep-rooted connection would serve as the culminating and final act of reciprocity between these contrasting individuals.

But it doesn’t mean there won’t be any more favors asked. On the contrary, the final scene of the movie suggests the potential for a third installment. This is hinted at when Portia abruptly interrupts Emily’s conversation with Stephanie to request a small favor. Emily inquires about the extent of this small favor, but we don’t get an answer. The film ends with a sealed envelope and the women celebrating the prospect of a new plan or scheme.

Could our thoughts wander to the possibilities of this hidden advantage? Might it be something grander than what we’ve previously encountered? It appears there are three things we can expect in the universe of “A Simple Favor”: a new favor will always arise, it won’t be straightforward, and no matter who she is – Emily, Faith, Charity, Hope, or any future character – she cannot meet an untimely end.

Another Simple Favor is now streaming on Prime Video.
