Channel Nine has let go of newsreader Gavin Morris as part of recent staff cuts. This is the latest in a series of job losses at the network.
I’m hearing some news out of Newcastle today – it looks like a well-known local presenter won’t be continuing with his current role. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that his contract won’t be renewed, which is always tough news for someone dedicated to their community.
Morris joined NBN News, which is owned by Nine, in 2009 as a weather presenter.
In 2022, he became news co-anchor alongside Natasha Beyersdorf.
Morris has also appeared on the Today show and has hosted the summer edition of Weekend Today.
It comes after Nine News Adelaide anchor Kate Collins was axed from the network after 19 years.

The newsreader was reportedly informed her contract wouldn’t be renewed and didn’t appear on Monday night’s broadcast for unknown reasons.
The decision came as a ‘huge shock’ to Collins, who is said to have been ‘absolutely blindsided’.
According to a source at The Advertiser, she is devastated by the job loss, as she truly loved her work and appreciated the opportunity.
The shock move came less than three days after she hosted the network’s Christmas Pageant coverage.
Collins began working at Nine as a reporter in 2006, and quickly started filling in as a news presenter on weekends in 2007.
It’s been reported Nine is looking to slash up to 50 jobs from the television unit.
Employees received an email from Amanda Laing, head of streaming and broadcast, announcing the start of discussions with staff.
As a lifestyle commentator, I’m hearing whispers about Amber Sherlock’s position at Channel Nine being uncertain. She was noticeably absent from Monday night’s broadcast, and frankly, it’s left a lot of people wondering what’s going on. It’s a tricky situation, and we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Viewers noticed a change on 9News when veteran anchor and weather presenter, 49, was absent from her regular position. Reporter Sophie Walsh filled in, but the network didn’t offer any reason for the change.
Newsroom insiders insist she is ‘gone’.
Sherlock has worked at Nine since 2007 and is believed to be among the many staff members recently laid off as the network cuts costs.
A source at Nine Network revealed to Daily Mail on Monday that Sherlock’s high salary might be a reason the network considers replacing her as their main weather presenter.
Nine did not deny that Sherlock was out of a job when approached by the Daily Mail on Monday.
As a long-time follower, I’ve been keeping up with the news, and it’s been confirmed that the company is going through some changes. While they aren’t commenting on specific people right now, they are unfortunately reducing their workforce by around 50 positions. It’s tough to see, but they’re not sharing details about who’s affected at this time.
Nine did, however, confirm a restructure was underway in order to drive ‘commercial growth’.
