Stephen Colbert and his son are developing new Lord of the Rings movie

Warner Bros. has announced a new Lord of the Rings project, developed by Stephen Colbert and his son, Peter McGee. The news came with a studio video featuring director Peter Jackson, who explained that this is part of a plan to expand the Lord of the Rings world with more stories.

Stephen Colbert, a big Tolkien enthusiast, recently discussed how a potential new story could be based on parts of The Fellowship of the Ring that weren’t used in the previous films. He pointed to six specific chapters that he kept revisiting, wondering if they could be expanded into a standalone story. Colbert suggested it would be great to create something that stayed true to both the original books and the existing movies.

Currently called The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, the new film takes place years after Frodo’s adventure. It centers on Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they travel the same route they once did, and follows Sam’s daughter, Elanor, as she discovers a secret connected to the War of the Ring. The filmmakers intend for the story to feel consistent with both the original books and the existing Lord of the Rings movies.

Colbert and McGee worked with veteran writer Philippa Boyens, who also wrote the original trilogy, to develop the script over roughly two years. This partnership follows Colbert’s previous involvement with the franchise, including a brief appearance in The Hobbit films and other creative work related to the world of Middle-earth.

Andy Serkis is directing a new movie, coming out in 2027, that continues the story of Gollum.
