As a long-time F1 enthusiast who has witnessed the highs and lows of the sport, I must say that the current situation with Sergio Perez and Red Bull is quite intriguing. On one hand, it’s unfortunate to see a seasoned driver like Perez struggle, but on the other, the potential for fresh talent is always exciting.
Besides the initial races of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Sergio Perez’s performance in the RB20 has been disappointing almost every race weekend. In fact, Red Bull considered replacing him prior to the summer break.
Yet, it appears that his Formula 1 career was rescued primarily because of the substantial sponsorship funds he provides and his widespread popularity amongst Latin American spectators.
It seems that one of the main factors keeping Perez on the Red Bull team was the potential negative consequences they might have faced during the Mexico City Grand Prix. Now that race is over, there could be another chance for Red Bull to replace Perez prior to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is less than three weeks away.
Since approximately a month ago, Liam Lawson has taken Daniel Ricciardo’s place at Red Bull (RB). As a result, Isack Hadjar is now Red Bull’s reserve driver, and if Sergio Perez is replaced by Lawson in the coming days, Hadjar could potentially be promoted to RB. This potential transition might occur in Las Vegas.
Does the move make sense?
Following the recent weekend’s events, Red Bull has narrowed the difference with Ferrari in the constructor championship to a mere 13 points. This significant reduction is due to Max Verstappen’s impressive drive from position seventeen to first place in Sao Paulo. With only a handful of chances remaining to make further progress, Red Bull faces a crucial choice.
If Christian Horner and Helmut Marko prioritize securing a position better than third in the championship for the added financial rewards, it’s possible that Lawson might get promoted to Red Bull, while Hadjar could be introduced as the new teammate for Yuki Tsunoda.
Although Marko commends Hadjar’s talent and readiness for Formula 1, there are some doubts about the 20-year-old, primarily his ability to manage the intense pressures that come with it. Not only did Hadjar fail to secure the Formula 2 championship this season, but he will also find himself in a tough fight among RB, Haas, and Alpine for sixth place in the constructor championship, which is no easy feat.
It’s important to note that not all Formula 2 drivers are immediately equipped for Formula 1, and disregarding this fact could prove costly for the team in the long run. If they choose to elevate him, he would be one of three rookies entering Formula 1 this season, with Oliver Bearman at Ferrari and Franco Colapinto at Williams being the others.
