The production primarily revolves around Daniel Brennan (portrayed by Matthew Gurney), a man isolated from society due to his deafness, further estranged from his community following an arrest for a suspected crime.

10 years have passed, and he’s diligently working towards uncovering the facts surrounding his imprisonment and restoring his bond with his long-lost daughter, Lara Peake, who they call Carly.

In the play, Duff takes on the role of Christine, a character who shares her curiosity about events from ten years ago. Simultaneously, Rose Ayling-Ellis, known for her work on EastEnders, portrays their daughter Miri, and Eddie Marsan, famous for his role in Back to Black, acts as Christine’s partner Stephen.

The television series “Reunion” hails from deaf author William Mager, who himself was born in the city where it was produced – Sheffield.

Previously discussed the show, Gurney mentioned: “Reunion” stands out as a remarkable narrative, distinct from my past projects.

As a gamer, I find myself immersed in the world of Brennan, my character, whose journey deviates significantly from the typical depictions of deaf lives in media. Interestingly, he’s met with hostility within the deaf community in-game, which offers an unvarnished glimpse into their on-screen reactions and behaviors. This portrayal feels raw, genuine, and authentically reflects the experiences of many deaf individuals.

Instead of focusing on audio like traditional actors do, we as visual storytellers place greater emphasis on creating a narrative through visual elements. This means that rather than just listening, you are encouraged to watch closely and interpret the story unfolding before you.

Reunion will premiere on BBC One on Monday, April 7 at 9pm.
