Anne Hathaway weigh in after she signs up for film adaptation of Colleen Hoover thriller Verity
As a long-time admirer of Anne Hathaway’s acting prowess and versatility, I find myself both intrigued and slightly puzzled by her recent choice to star in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover‘s “Verity.
Actress Anne Hathaway has secured her upcoming movie role, a screen adaption of the suspenseful novel “Verity” by Colleen Hoover.
According to Deadline’s report from Wednesday, the comedian-turned-director Michael Showalter, known for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, has been linked to the director’s role for an upcoming project.
Following closely is the much-awaited Amazon Studios film based on MGM, a sequel to another Hoover adaptation titled “It Ends With Us,” which premiered in August with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in lead roles.
However, the news was met with criticism on social platforms, as many appeared to be reacting negatively to Hoover’s writing style that is considered less than exceptional by some.
The writing for Hoover’s project is said to go through Nick Antosca, who is currently responsible for the screenplay. (or alternatively, The screenplay for Hoover’s project will pass through Nick Antosca, the present writer.)
He is merely the most recent one who has attempted to work on the adaptation, following in the footsteps of Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and the team of Will Honley and April Maguire, who previously wrote drafts of the screenplay.
In the upcoming movie, Hathaway and Showalter will reunite as they both worked on directing and co-writing her film “The Idea of You,” a production that Amazon Studios released just this year.
As reported by Deadline, the story centers around a struggling writer named Lowen Ashleigh. This writer receives an unanticipated opportunity that could be her ticket to success in the form of a remarkable offer.
Verity Crawford, portrayed by Hathaway, is a highly acclaimed author of thrillers who experiences a puzzling and seemingly incapacitating incident. In her absence, her husband Jeremy requests Lowen to complete the remaining books in a continuous series that Verity started writing.
However, upon starting work at the wealthy couple’s grand estate, Lowen stumbled across an incomplete manuscript that could potentially expose hidden shadows from Verity and her spouse’s past lives.
The emerging author finds herself obliged to carry on her tasks assigned by Jeremy, all the while pondering whether Verity’s works are purely fictional or ominous predictions from a potentially perilous individual.
Verity, which is described as a ‘psychosexual thriller,’ was self-published by Hoover in 2018.
The author, known for being the first to self-publish a book that hit the number one spot on the New York Times Best Seller list (Hopeless in 2012), also independently published Verity in 2018. Later, in 2021, Grand Central Publishing acquired it after it had already gained significant popularity on its own.
Hoover, predominantly known for her work in romance and young adult literature, has faced criticism from certain reviewers regarding her writing approach and perceived repetitive use of familiar storyline tropes.
Despite Verity being a blockbuster, the audience didn’t appear thrilled about Hathaway taking up the lead role in its adaptation. Their dissatisfaction was voiced openly on the platform X (previously known as Twitter).
One fan included a clip of a woman writing an insult — ‘ur nasty and a b****’ — and jokingly attributed it to ‘anne hathaway’s agent.’
Others thought a Colleen Hoover adaptation was beneath the Oscar-winning actress.
‘anne hathaway you are queen of genovia you do not need to stoop to these levels,’ wrote one fan.
Another fan was even more blunt, writing, ‘not even anne hathaway will convince me to watch anything with colleen f***ing hoover as a the blueprint [sic].’
One person lamented that Anne Hathaway’s return with these terrible books should never have seen the light of day, calling it a true tragedy,” said the post.
After learning that Anne Hathaway will appear in an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, one person humorously quipped, “Anne Hathaway in a… what?” Accompanying the comment was a playful gif depicting SpongeBob SquarePants’ character Squidward with a spasming eye.
One fan called for ‘an investigation into why anne hathaway continues to attach herself to the worst book to movie adaptations.’
It appears that some fans had lost faith in Hathaway’s projects and found her decision to take on the role in a Verity adaptation entirely unsurprising.

Some fans managed to look on the bright side.
‘Hate this but Anne Hathaway finally has her own Gone Girl [heart emoji,]’ one person wrote.
As a devoted admirer, I couldn’t help but notice when another reader praised Colleen Hoover’s work by labeling Verity as ‘the only good things that she has ever produced.’ Additionally, it was intriguing to learn that Anne will reportedly be portraying the title character, even though she was initially thought to be a fitting choice for Lowen.
Verity will reportedly be released in theaters, but a date has not been announced yet.
