As a devoted fan of Annabel Croft, I cannot help but feel deeply moved by her heartrending tale of love, loss, and resilience. Her experiences are a poignant reminder of the complexities of human emotions and the profound impact that our loved ones can have on our lives.

Annabel Croft has disclosed that she has been deeply affected, even scarred, by an unkind and ruthless nurse who callously made fun of her deceased spouse as he was dying.

In May 2023, the ex-tennis player (now 58 years old) tragically lost her longtime partner, Mel Coleman, to cancer. They are parents to three grown-up children: Charlie, Amber, and Lilly.

In an interview with The Times, Annabel reminisced about her late husband‘s last days, mentioning a specific nurse. She expressed, “She was incredibly harsh. I suspect she might have been a psychopath, as she seemed to find pleasure and satisfaction in my husband Mel’s decline.

‘When [our son] Charlie asked if [Mel] had weeks or months to live, she said mockingly, “Hours!”‘.

As a die-hard admirer, let me share how I’d rephrase it: In my fervor, I recount the Strictly celebrity expressing that despite my heartfelt entreaties, the nurse would communicate in a booming tone. And when she made clear they wouldn’t be attempting resuscitation for Mel, her words reached me from my hospital bed, echoing like a thunderclap in my ears.

‘It was evil beyond anything you could imagine. To this day I am traumatised by it’.

Instead of staying at home this year, she mentioned that it will be more bearable for her and her family to travel overseas during the Christmas season.

Mel died just eight weeks after he was diagnosed with the terminal illness.

In the interview, Annabel said Mel was ‘always positive’ and was confident he could beat it.

Additionally, she mentioned Mel’s passion for Strictly Come Dancing, focusing specifically on professional dancer Johannes Radebe. Notably, Annabel was partnered with him the previous year.

They made it all way to the semi final and are still firm friends.

In a recent development, the interview takes place shortly following Annabel’s disclosure that she uses her late husband’s scarf for sleeping each night and continues to put effort into dressing up for him.

Annabel mentioned that she wishes she had given him more compliments while he was alive, since he was constantly appreciative of her talents.

On the Style DNA podcast, the presenter of Wimbledon admitted: “I keep his scarf by my side at night. It’s the one he wore during all his treatments, and it carries his unique scent.

‘So I go to bed and sleep with his scarf by my pillow.’

She joked that she ‘didn’t really like’ the scarf, adding: ‘It’s an awful scarf. But he absolutely loved it so I sleep with it in my bed.’

Apart from openly admitting it, Mel also mentioned that Annabel frequently chooses outfits she believes he appreciates, given his consistent compliments on her clothing choices.

‘He always made me feel like the most important woman in the world,’ she continued.

He genuinely made me feel valued. In truth, I enjoyed dressing up for him, as he always admired and complimented whatever I chose to wear.

I’ll be sorry for not giving him more praise. I often told him he was growing increasingly attractive and aging gracefully compared to me, and it seemed like he became even more good-looking each day.

‘He was somebody who aged well and became more handsome as he got older.’

Annabel mentioned that he truly appreciated my style, and she noted that she intentionally choose outfits she believes he would admire.

‘So yeah, I’ll continue to do that.’

The star confessed she recently wore a dress that she had bought days before he died.

I returned it home, displayed it for him, and I’d imagined myself wearing that dress with him.

Additionally, I had often imagined, “Ah, this is what I will don during our vacation together.” To my delight, he truly admired the outfit.

Remembering the dress recently she explained: ‘Of course, I didn’t wear it until just recently and then it dawned on me that, “oh my god, that was the dress that I bought just before he died”.’
