Anna Maxwell Martin’s “devastating” new Liverpool-set BBC drama is on TV tonight

The highly-anticipated new BBC drama Unforgivable, starring Anna Maxwell Martin, is on TV tonight.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait to dive into the latest masterpiece from the pen of Jimmy McGovern, an exceptional screenwriter. His previous works such as the intense prison drama “Time,” featuring acting greats like Stephen Graham, Jodie Whittaker, and Bella Ramsey, have left me in awe. And let’s not forget his brilliant creation, BBC One’s crime anthology “Accused,” graced by stars like Sean Bean and Anne-Marie Duff. This new drama promises to be another gripping tale that I’m eagerly looking forward to.

In a made-up play titled “Unforgivable“, we follow a family struggling with the heartbreaking consequences of grooming and sexual misconduct, committed by one of their own. As per the BBC summary, the story delves into the far-reaching impacts of abuse from various viewpoints and shows how those entangled can strive to progress amidst the wreckage, exploring their attempts to heal and move forward in the aftermath.

On Thursday, 24th July, at 9:00 PM, a poignant and challenging drama is set to debut on BBC Two. This two-hour film will be a heartfelt watch, with a total runtime of 105 minutes. Titled “Unforgivable”, it can also be streamed on BBC iPlayer for your convenience.

The talented cast of Maxwell Martin’s production includes Anna Friel from “Marcella”, Bobby Schofield known for “Time” and “SAS Rogue Heroes”, David Threlfall who has worked on “Nightsleeper” and “Shameless”, as well as Austin Haynes, recognized for his roles in “Adolescence” and “All Creatures Great and Small”.

Paddy Rowan, Mark Womack, Phina Oruche, and debut actor Fin McParland are among the main cast members in addition to others.

The film “Unforgivable” is helmed by director Julia Ford, who has a background in projects such as “Showtrial” and “The Bay”. This production hails from LA Productions, based in Liverpool.

This project brought Anna Maxwell Martin back together with several creative individuals, among them Jimmy McGovern. As she shared with BBC, at her age, one often has long-standing collaborators. Jimmy is one such individual with whom she’s worked multiple times throughout her career.

Maxwell Martin shared his thoughts about collaborating with Julia Ford on the ITV crime series ‘Until I Kill You’. “She’s incredibly talented,” he remarked. “She’s thoughtful, professional, and simply outstanding in her delivery of dramatic scenes.

In the meantime, McGovern commented on the drama’s cast: “It was wonderful to collaborate with David Threlfall at last. I’ve always respected him. I was thrilled when he agreed, even though it’s just a step away from what he usually does.

I find Anna Maxwell Martin and Anna Friel simply remarkable; they are among the greatest actresses globally. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Bobby Schofield on ‘Time’. He’s an exceptional actor, truly gifted, and we were always eager to have him for our production.

In my opinion, those two young performers were exceptionally talented. It was quite fortunate that we managed to secure their services for our production; luck certainly plays a significant role in the casting process, doesn’t it?

Unforgivable premieres on BBC Two at 9pm on Thursday 24 July.
