The drama The Duke, featuring Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Goode, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Originally made in 2020, its release was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and it wasn’t shown in cinemas until two years later.
The film tells the story of Kempton Bunton (played by Jim Broadbent), a taxi driver who famously stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in the 1960s. He didn’t do it for personal gain, but as a way to pressure the government into providing better care for the elderly, specifically by offering free television to pensioners.
Fifty years later, the complete story came to light, revealing that Bunton was driven to make a difference in the world and also to repair his relationship with his wife, Dorothy (played by Helen Mirren).

This charming heist movie will win you over with its wit and heart. Empire magazine called it a delightful comedy, and a perfect final film from director Roger Michell, who sadly passed away before it was released.
Martin, who used to be the director’s partner and is known for his role in Motherland, plays the character of Mrs. Growling in the film. Goode portrays Jeremy Hutchinson, the lawyer who defended Bunton in court.
