Anna Chancellor Shares Heartfelt Connection to Late Daughter Through Unique Funeral Wishes
Anna Chancellor shared insights about feeling bonded with her deceased daughter through adhering to her funeral requests, detailing the intricate wake she organized in her discussion.
In London, the well-known actress, aged 59, who is recognized for her work in Four Weddings and a Funeral, as well as What a Girl Wants, shared that Poppy had a prearranged ‘plan for passing,’ prior to being diagnosed with leukemia.
36-year-old Poppy Chancellor, a talented illustrator and paper-cut artist, lost her life to acute myeloid leukaemia in September 2023, surrounded by her closest loved ones.
Currently, Anna is revealing details about the distinctive funeral of her daughter in a fresh conversation with The Independent.
She shared with the press that her farewell celebration carried a motif reminiscent of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, which included a drum-and-sage ceremony led by a Canadian First Nation friend, gold streamer drapes, and fireworks.
Anna explained: ‘Poppy had written a very coherent death plan, even before she was diagnosed.’

Did you know that one beautiful aspect of life is the ability to honor someone’s final wishes even after they’ve passed? This connection can help us keep a sense of continuity and closeness, allowing their memory to live on in our actions.
* For a brief moment, the Jack Russell Terrier perched itself on her, then remained there. People around exclaimed, “Remove her quickly!” But I assured them, she seems alright. Death, in its unique and enigmatic way, can be both amusing and breathtakingly beautiful.*
After Anna admitted that she often cries in public following the sad demise of Poppy, people walking by seem oblivious.
The actress continues to navigate through her grief, as it’s a journey that follows her wherever she goes, since she lost her one and only child.
She explained to The Times that, in a sense, when someone loses a child, they receive an unspoken privilege or pass. She further noted, “Society tends to accept it.” (This version attempts to preserve the original sentiment while using more conversational language and simplifying the structure.)
In Playhouse Creatures, her new castmates have provided a glimmer of comfort for her. This upcoming production marks a near-decade since her last play, and the team has been open to discussing the subject of loss with her. They’ve even let her know that crying is acceptable in their presence.
Yet, Anna encounters a distinctly contrasting reaction from the general population, and when she’s out in public, often overwhelmed by sadness, people seem to disregard her.
She mentioned: ‘I’ve wept in places I’ve visited, even on trains, yet no one seemed to notice. Perhaps it’s due to my age, as I’m no longer the center of attention or easily noticed.’
Fortunately for Anna, she doesn’t worry too much about others’ opinions of her, a characteristic she has maintained throughout her life. At just 16 years old, she left school with only two O-levels and ventured to London. Later on, while attending drama school, she gave birth to Poppy.

Of course, Poppy developed a comparable demeanor due to her leisurely childhood in London, growing accustomed to her mother’s boisterous gatherings to such an extent that she found peace only amidst the nightly commotion.
In my early years, when I was only four, life took an unexpected turn as my parents parted ways. From then on, I resided with my mom in a cozy flat nestled beneath the skyline of Shepherd’s Bush, West London. We were quite the duo, often spotted out and about in the vibrant nightlife scene of nearby Ladbroke Grove, blending seamlessly into the trendy crowd.
In 2010, Anna tied the knot with Redha Debbah, a seven-years-younger ex-minicab driver originally from Algeria, during a modest ceremony held in Notting Hill.
Poppy reminisced affectionately about her ‘unconventional upbringing’ with her ‘cherished’ mom, whom she referred to as her ‘dearest companion’.
She once mentioned, ‘Though I was an only child, I never experienced loneliness as there was always a gathering to attend, a trip to the bookies with dad, or shared moments at the local pub with both of them.’ Essentially, there were nightly events and fantastic pubs that everyone frequented, making such socialization their norm.
Despite not being unfamiliar with sorrow, Poppy had experienced it deeply when her father, renowned poet Jock Scot, passed away at the age of 63 due to cancer. This tragic event prompted her to establish a support group known as Griefcase.
After receiving a diagnosis in 2014, his father declined chemotherapy when told he had only about three months left to live. Yet, he managed to survive for an additional two years.
In May 2023, after acquiring several infections due to her wisdom teeth removal procedure, Poppy adopted a practical attitude towards handling her subsequent diagnosis.
To get ready for her chemotherapy treatment, she courageously decided to part ways with her distinctive “bob” haircut and expressed it as being “chemo-ready” in the year 2023. In other words, she bid farewell to the bob hairstyle, marking the end of an era.

In May of the same year, Poppy shared, “Cancer has had a personal connection for me.” She’s long been passionate about raising cancer awareness and supporting those dealing with grief. Now, she finds that these issues are becoming distressingly real and immediate.
She mentioned, “I’m mourning my life prior to the diagnosis and finding it tough to adapt to the pain from injuries and frequent needle pricks.
Speaking to The Times, I shared my thoughts about my daughter: “In her final moments, she demonstrated the same rigor and resolve as she did in handling her grief. She took care of her affairs, securing life insurance and ensuring all relationships were settled and amends made where necessary. There was no lingering negativity. Her bravery and extraordinary spirit left a profound impact.
In September 2023, Anna, along with other family members, shared a heartfelt tribute on their daughter’s social media platform, honoring a truly remarkable source of life.
As an over-the-moon admirer, I’d like to echo their gratitude towards the outstanding team at Royal Marsden Hospital in London, who tirelessly cared for my beloved Poppy. To everyone enduring similar hardships, know that you have our unwavering support and encouragement every step of the way.
To dear friends of Poppy, we extend this message filled with heartfelt affection.

This individual, aged 36, earned their education from the prestigious Royal Drawing School, and has a work history with a succession of well-known companies such as Cath Kidston and Adidas.
It’s said that King Charles possesses one of her artworks, a token of gratitude given to him following her stay at an artist’s retreat at Dumfries House – a grand estate in Ayrshire that he purchased for approximately £45 million back in 2007.
Additionally, she authored a book known as ‘Cut It Out!’, providing instructions for readers on crafting intricate papercut art designs directly onto an empty piece of paper.
