Anime’s Underrated Spring 2025 Cyberpunk Series Is Inspired by Westworld

The director of Your Forma, Takaharu Ozaki, has verified that the surprising success of this show was influenced by a beloved science fiction television program.

Referring to director Ozaki, it was mentioned that he reminisced about his familiar territory in sci-fi literature when reading the original “Your Forma” light novel series. He stated, “Upon starting ‘Your Forma’, I immediately thought of classics like ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘The Matrix’. I found myself recollecting cyberpunk movies from the 80s and 90s.” As he delved deeper into the story, more connections emerged. He mentioned, “There is a distinct theme that explores what it means to be human,” before also mentioning films such as Kathryn Bigelow’s “Strange Days” and the French animated tech-noir thriller from 2006 titled “- Renaissance”.

Drawing inspiration from the popular light novel series penned by Mareho Kikuishi and illustrated by Tsubata Nozaki, which has received widespread acclaim, garnering an average IMDb rating of 7.8/10 at the time of writing, the story revolves around. According to the official plot summary, “Your Forma”, a technology used for virus protection against encephalitis, is now commonplace. In this world where every sight, sound, and emotion is being constantly recorded, Officer Echika employs this intrusive technology to solve crimes.

The anime boasts a renowned voice acting lineup, with Kana Hanazawa playing Officer Echika Hieda, Kensho Ono voicing Harold W. Lucraft, her android partner, Nao Tōyama as Bigga, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Fokine, Jun Fukuyama as Sozon A. Chernov, and Koichi Yamadera as Kuprian Matinovich Szubin. Despite the anime version of Your Forma having only six episodes to date, there is a wealth of content yet to be adapted for television. At present, the ongoing light novel series of Your Forma spans seven volumes, with the latest volume still awaiting an English publication date.

Although the series “Your Forma” has received a favorable reception and is widely read, it remains somewhat challenging for Western viewers to find as an anime, mainly because it hasn’t been made available through popular streaming platforms like Crunchyroll or Netflix in North America. While this doesn’t make the series entirely unattainable, its limited distribution on a specialized service that many genre enthusiasts may not subscribe to already narrows its accessibility.
