As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I’ve witnessed countless franchises rise and fall, but none quite like the resilient Evil Dead saga. From its humble beginnings in 1981 to the latest animated spinoff, this series has proven time and time again that it’s not just a survivor, but a thriving force in the world of horror.
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but marvel at how Sam Raimi’s chilling horror series, the legendary Evil Dead, continues to thrive even after all these years. Just last year, we were thrilled with the exhilarating and entertaining Evil Dead Rise, and it seems that there’s much more in store for us fans, like at least two additional live-action films yet to come!
However, iconic actor Bruce Campbell, known for his portrayal of Ash in the 1981 film and subsequent appearances, gave Entertainment Weekly some latest news about the franchise. Among other things, he confirmed that the much-anticipated animated series is still under development.
Though it seems doubtful that Bruce Campbell will portray Ash again in a substantial live-action part, he has expressed his readiness to lend his voice to the character for an animated offshoot instead.
We are developing an animated version, like a series. I’ll do that. I’ll do Ash’s voice all day long, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.
His remarks to EW are consistent with what he shared with Bloody Disgustful in March 2023, prior to the release of Evil Dead Rise. Back then, he mentioned they were actively working on an animated adaptation, but noted that coordinating schedules with Raimi has proven challenging.
Bruce Campbell says the future of Evil Dead ‘is two more damn movies’
Regarding the animated project, set aside, the future of the Evil Dead series appears promising. At present, two live-action movies are under production. One is being directed by Sébastien Vaniček, known for Infested, and another by Francis Galluppi from The Last Stop in Yuma County. However, the specifics about their plots remain confidential for both films.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can tell you that these movies are such a steal; they don’t need to rake in huge numbers to stay afloat. However, once they started earning substantial profits, it’s become almost impossible not to be drawn in by their success.
Evil Dead has managed to survive far beyond its original concept, which was based on a solitary cabin in the woods with Ash as the protagonist. It has demonstrated its ability to adapt and introduce new characters, all while staying true to the core idea. According to Campbell, the secret lies in focusing on the essential aspects of the series – namely, ordinary people being tormented by a wicked force – and finding creative ways to explore and expand upon this concept.
