Angie Stone, Grammy-nominated R&B singer, dies in vehicle collision
Angie Stone, a soulful R&B artist and lyricist who achieved fame as part of the neo-soul resurgence during the ’90s after almost twenty years in the music industry, tragically passed away on Saturday morning due to a car accident in Alabama, as reported by CNN. She was 63 years old.
The representative, Yvonne Forbes, informed CNN that the news of her death is true. She stated that at the time, Stone was traveling in a vehicle following a performance in Mobile, Alabama, when the vehicle was unfortunately involved in an accident.
Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina as a teenager, Stone started her musical journey by forming the hip-hop group Sequence, signing with Sugar Hill Records. Later, she established Vertical Hold and collaborated with artists like D’Angelo, Lenny Kravitz, and Mary J. Blige. However, it wasn’t until 1999, with the release of her debut solo album “Black Diamond”, that Stone gained widespread recognition. This album, praised by critics, was eventually certified gold and produced the number-one hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”, which ruled Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart for 10 weeks. In 2002, she achieved another success with “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”, a song that has garnered over 136 million streams on Spotify.

As a moviegoer reviewing these tunes, I must say they perfectly captured the raw, authentic charm reminiscent of old-school vibes – “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” brilliantly sampled The O’Jays’ iconic “Back Stabbers” from the ’70s. This nostalgic essence is exactly what catapulted artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and D’Angelo to stardom in the neo-soul scene. For years, R&B had been gradually adopting hip-hop’s flashy attitude, but these songs have brought us back to those handcrafted ideals that truly resonate.
In a 2000 conversation with The Times, Stone expressed that Lauryn Hill had shattered traditional expectations with her Grammy-winning 1998 album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Stone added that our image-centric society was challenged by Hill, as she demonstrated it’s acceptable to be authentic, attractive, and sing about meaningful topics.
