Angelina Jolie’s anticipated new movie lands Netflix release

As a lifelong aficionado of both cinema and opera, I must say that the upcoming Netflix release of “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie as the legendary Maria Callas, has me absolutely thrilled! Having spent countless hours immersed in the world of these grand divas, I can’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with Ms. Jolie as she embarks on this challenging and ambitious project.

The upcoming movie by Angelina Jolie will be made available on Netflix, having first been showcased at the Venice Film Festival.

The biographical film about Maria Callas, titled Maria, featuring Angelina Jolie in the leading role, will become available on Netflix in the United States at an undisclosed future date after its premiere today (August 29). As of now, a release date for the UK has not been announced.

Director Pablo Larraín, known for his work on the movie ‘Spencer’ about Princess Diana and ‘Jackie’, the Jackie Kennedy biopic, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the streaming platform for the project’s launch.

He’s thrilled to collaborate once more with the dedicated Netflix crew, who have such a deep love for films. This project, he noted, represents his most intimate creative endeavor to date.

“This work offers a creative exploration and psychological depiction of Maria Callas, a renowned artist who spent her life captivating audiences globally. Eventually, she embarks on a journey to discover her unique voice and identity, singing for herself rather than others. It’s an immense privilege for me to narrate this tale, mirroring the global reach Maria achieved with her life.”

Additionally featured in the ensemble are Pierfrancesco Favino from “The Hummingbird”, Alba Rohrwacher who shines in “La Chimera”, Haluk Bilginer known for his role in “Winter Sleep”, Kodi Smit-McPhee, famously seen in “Elvis”, and Valeria Golino, a standout performer in “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”.

The screenplay for this piece was penned by the brilliant mind behind “Peaky Blinders,” Steven Knight. It was produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, and Lorenzo Mieli.

“The movie summary presents Maria as she narrates the captivating, heartbreaking tale of the renowned female opera singer’s life, reflecting on her past and reinventing it during her swan song in 1970s Paris.”

The director’s statement for Venice Film Festival added: “Maria Callas, the greatest opera singer of all time, undoubtedly had a most unique, beautiful, and tormented life. This is the story of her last days, a celebration depicted through memories, friends, and, most importantly, her singing.”

At the Venice Film Festival discussion (as reported by Variety), Salt actress Jolie revealed that she invested nearly seven months honing her skills in opera singing to play the part. She admitted, “It’s common knowledge that I was really anxious about it.”

I dedicated nearly seven months to training since working with Pablo requires a full commitment. He encourages, in the most inspiring manner, for one to fully immerse themselves in the work, ensuring they truly learn and grow through it.

“My first time singing I remember being so nervous. My sons were there and they helped lock the door so that nobody else was coming in, and I was shaky. Pablo, in his decency, started me in a small room and ended me in La Scala. So he gave me time to grow.”

Maria will make her debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 29th. She’s scheduled for release on Netflix in the United States at a future point, but a specific date hasn’t been announced yet. As for the UK, they haven’t revealed a release date as of now.
