Angelina Jolie ‘was frightened’ and ‘shaky’ singing in public for the FIRST time in biopic Maria and reveals how her sons helped get her through it
As a film enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to Pablo Larraín’s trilogy of iconic women, “Maria,” has piqued my interest significantly. With Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart already gracing our screens as Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana respectively, it’s intriguing to see who will step into the shoes of Maria this time around.
Before taking on the role of the renowned opera singer Maria Callas in director Pablo Larraín’s biopic “Maria,” Angelina Jolie hadn’t performed a song publicly or on screen before. This film had its debut at the Venice International Film Festival on Thursday.
The 49-year-old Academy Award recipient shared with reporters during a press conference that it’s common knowledge among everyone present that he was extremely anxious.
For nearly seven months, I dedicated myself thoroughly to my training as working alongside Pablo requires full commitment. His unique approach inspires me to give my best, ensuring not only effort but also genuine learning and growth.
Angelina sought the expertise of vocal trainer Eric Vetro, who has worked with artists such as Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, John Legend, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Rosalía, and Charlie Puth.
In her initial singing performance, Jolie, mother of Maddox (age 23), Pax (20), and Knox (16), recalled feeling extremely anxious. Her sons were present and took the extra step to secure the door, ensuring privacy for her, which only added to her nervousness. She was visibly shaky and terrified.
Pablo, in his kindness, initially placed me in a modest space before eventually bringing me to the grandeur of the Paris Opera House, La Scala. In doing so, he allowed me ample opportunity to develop and flourish.
Originally a wayward figure in Hollywood, who was raised on The Clash’s music, expressed that her greatest concern would be to let down the passionate followers of Maria. She explained, ‘I grew quite fond of her, so I didn’t want to fail or be untrue to this woman.’
The movie primarily takes place during the 70s, but Angelina seems to reenact Maria Callas’ (originally named Kalogeropoulos) 1958 performance at a Paris gala, which was transmitted via Eurovision.
Originally from New York and of Greek descent, this remarkable vocalist possessed a potent soprano voice with three clearly defined ranges that stretched nearly three octaves. She performed her last concert in 1965 after a series of health issues were cited as the reason for her retirement. These included conditions such as dermatomyositis, early menopause, and a significant weight loss of around 80 pounds which occurred in 1954.
Maria, who was involved with Aristotle Onassis during his marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy (former First Lady of the United States), spent her final 11 years residing in Paris after giving up her American nationality. She passed away at age 53 from a heart attack in 1977.
In the film, Callas is shown practicing for a hypothetical show that doesn’t occur, with a movie team headed by Kodi Smit-McPhee from Stranger Things capturing her rehearsals on camera.
In the first video shared on Thursday featuring Maria, the renowned opera singer expresses concern to her butler Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino) about disregarding the advice of her blood doctor and recommendations for medication, particularly a hypnotic sedative called methaqualone. Instead, she seems to be self-regulating its use.
‘And when I write my autobiography I will title it The Day Ferruccio Saved My Life,’ Maria says.
‘And what day was that?’ Ferruccio asked.
“Day after day, without fail. Each and every time. That’s what makes me resent you so much. You’re the one who always pulls me out when I fall into the river,” Callas jokes.
Twice Academy Award-nominated prosthetics artist Arjen Tuiten was enlisted to alter Angelina Jolie’s facial features, yet it seems that she retained a petite nose, rather than the noticeably larger one characteristic of Maria from real life.
On a Wednesday, Netflix obtained the U.S. distribution privileges, though a launch date remains undisclosed for the film “Maria,” which is vying for the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival.
Maria represents the concluding part of a trilogy by the 48-year-old Chilean filmmaker, who has previously brought to life two iconic women – Jackie (released in 2016) and Spencer (released in 2021). Both Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart received Oscar nominations for their roles in these films.
Additionally, Valeria Golino, Haluk Bilginer, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Alessandro Bressanello are also part of the talented cast.
This is his debut acting performance since the critically panned Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Eternals (directed by Chloé Zhao) in 2021.
On September 8, Angelina Jolie will receive the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media during the Toronto International Film Festival. Remarkably, this award ceremony coincides with the global debut of her fifth directorial project, “Without Blood,” featuring Salma Hayek.
