Angelina Jolie reveals “biggest challenge” of new biopic movie Maria
The challenging role portrayed by Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in the latest biopic, titled “Maria,” presented a distinctive test in her acting career.
In the film, the lead actor learned to perform opera live on location. The on-set performances in the movie Maria are a blend of her voice and pre-recorded tracks of Maria Callas’ vocals.
To reach those notes, Jolie shared that the primary hurdle wasn’t strictly the singing, but rather, learning to let go.
In her conversation with Digital Spy, she expressed that our bodies carry a great deal, including sounds we make and those we suppress for self-protection. For her, the most challenging aspect was breaking free, expressing herself openly, and discovering her own voice.
It dawned on me just how much I’ve been harboring emotions throughout the course of our lives, which may not be immediately apparent to any of us. In a sense, it seems like I’ve somehow lost the ability to express myself effectively.
As a gamer, let me tell you, having to sing live on set feels like a digital boss battle that I dread, especially when it’s just my voice echoing in the silence, with no backup tracks or sound effects to help me out.
At times, you take on things in life that are so far outside your familiar territory, they’re almost unbelievable. They push you past fear, and you find yourself forced to let go,” she reminisced.
However, I consider myself quite fortunate since I worked with a director who was incredibly watchful, powerful, and unwavering in his vision. He knew exactly what he wanted for the role.
In order to accurately depict the iconic singing of Maria Callas, Director Pablo Larraín believed it was necessary for Angelina Jolie to learn to sing like her.
He clarified that playing the character isn’t merely about creating the appropriate illusion; it’s the essential method, even during non-singing scenes. The music serves as the entrance, providing access to everything.
Maria is released in UK cinemas on January 10, and is available to watch now on Netflix in the US.
