Angelina Jolie and Pamela Anderson films lead TIFF 2024 world premieres

As a passionate cinephile who has been following the film festival circuit for years, I’m thrilled to see the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announce two of its most anticipated sections: Gala and Special Presentations. With 63 films unveiled so far, TIFF continues to be a significant inflection point in the year of movies, launching potential awards season contenders alongside other prominent fall festivals at Telluride, Venice, and New York.

On Monday, the Toronto International Film Festival revealed the names of two prominent film lineups for its upcoming edition, featuring a total of 63 movies in the Gala and Special Presentation categories.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of attending various film festivals throughout the year, including Telluride, Venice, and New York. Among these esteemed events, Toronto holds a special place in my heart. Why, you ask? Well, Toronto is where many potential award-winning films make their grand debut, signaling the beginning of the awards season.

Many more films are expected to be unveiled in the upcoming weeks for this year’s TIFF, taking place from September 5th to 15th. The films announced on Monday present an impressive lineup worth looking forward to.

At the festival’s world premiere, you’ll find Mike Leigh’s latest film “Hard Truths,” featuring Marianne Jean-Baptiste and marking a return for Leigh to contemporary storytelling after creating several period pieces. Additionally, Gia Coppola’s drama titled “The Last Showgirl” is premiering. In this production, Pamela Anderson portrays a 50-something dancer who must make crucial decisions about her life.

At the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), several films are making their world debut. One is Edward Burns’ drama “Millers in Marriage,” featuring Julianna Margulies, Gretchen Mol, and Minnie Driver. Another is David MacKenzie’s thriller “Relay,” starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James, and Sam Worthington. Additionally, world premieres include Sydney Freeland’s sports drama “Rez Ball,” which has a screenplay co-written by Sterlin Harjo of “Reservation Dogs,” and Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside,” a boxing story with a script penned by Barry Jenkins.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I recently watched “Without Blood,” a powerful war drama directed and penned by the talented Angelina Jolie, based on Alessandro Baricco’s book of the same name. Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir delivered captivating performances in this gripping adaptation.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for exciting new films, especially those making their international debuts at prestigious festivals like TIFF. Among this year’s offerings, there are some standouts that have caught my attention. For instance, Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which I’m eagerly anticipating, will be premiering there. Starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, it promises to be an intriguing papal drama that is also set for screenings at Venice and Telluride.

Michael Gracey’s musical biopic “Better Man,” which marks its world premiere and stars Robbie Williams himself, is sure to pique strong interest.

At TIFF this year, you’ll find many films from Cannes that received accolades. Some of these are “Anora,” directed by Sean Baker and winning the Palme d’Or; “Emilia Pérez,” helmed by Jacques Audiard and starring award-winning performances by Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón; “Caught by the Tides” by Jia Zhang-Ke; “Bird” from Andrea Arnold; “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” by Rungano Nyoni; “Oh, Canada” by Paul Schrader; and David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.”)

Cutler and Elton John’s husband, David Furnish.

Previously announced, the festival is set to begin with the world premiere of “Nutcrackers” by David Gordon Green, featuring Ben Stiller, and conclude with Rebel Wilson making her directorial debut in the musical comedy “Debs.”

In the 2023 version of TIFF, Cord Jefferson’s film “American Fiction” was introduced. This production garnered the prestigious People’s Choice award and later earned Jefferson an Oscar for the best adapted screenplay. Additionally, it received nominations in the categories of best picture, actor (Jeffrey Wright), supporting actor (Sterling K. Brown), and original score.
