Angela Rippon, 80, discusses mortality as she reveals her plan is to ‘die young – as late as possible’

Angela Rippon has revealed it is her ambition to ‘die young – as late as possible‘.

The elderly television host passionately conveyed a compelling point emphasizing the significance of physical activity throughout one’s lifespan.

In the Dr Louise Newson Podcast, Angela delved into how dance and other forms of movement significantly influence physical and emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, and potentially ward off illnesses.

Angela stated, “Dance is a power that you can harness at any stage in life, regardless of your age or physical abilities.

‘My ambition is to die young—as late as possible. And that’s what dance will help you to do.

‘Just like any machine, the human body is made of countless working components. If you don’t take care of it, these parts can become stuck or corroded. It’s essential to keep your body active.’

In 2023, Angela participated in Strictly Come Dancing, making her the eldest competitor ever on the program at 76 years old.

She emphasized the advantages of dancing, stating, ‘Prevention is key, not a cure. By preventing issues from arising in the first place, you can avoid costly medications and hospital visits.’

‘Dancing can work wonders for those dealing with Parkinson’s disease. Music assists them in managing their movements, enhances their walking style, and boosts their overall mobility.’

Approximately 153,000 individuals in the United Kingdom have registered with Parkinson’s, and out of this number, about 50,000 engage in dance classes. My wish is for the remaining 103,000 people to also benefit from dance classes.

Every year, approximately 1.6 million individuals aged sixty and above are likely to experience a fall resulting in injury… By embracing dance, we could potentially reduce the National Health Service’s annual expenditure by up to £4 billion. Consider dance as investing in your future health savings plan.

In a different part of the conversation, Angela discussed gender balance in broadcasting, expressing that significant progress has been achieved since she began her career.

Reflecting on the past 59 years, it’s heartening to witness the significant number of young women working in television today. The sight of a bustling television studio filled with women never fails to impress me.

‘Many male TV executives today grew up working alongside talented women, rather than through the traditional “old boys club” system.’

In 2004, Angela received an OBE for her significant contributions to broadcasting, charities, and the arts. Last October, she marked her 80th birthday by hosting four extravagant parties.

At an afternoon gathering over tea at The Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, she shared her thoughts: ” frankly, I haven’t experienced being eighty yet, and I see no reason for that to change.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I plan to utilize every moment of my time here gracefully, embracing an unconventional approach to aging that is filled with joy and excitement, rather than dwelling on the traditional notions of what growing old should be. It’s all about making the most of each day!
