Andy Weir Teases Next Sci-Fi Book & Potential Project Hail Mary Sequel

Andy Weir, the author of the popular sci-fi novel that’s being adapted into the upcoming Ryan Gosling film Project Hail Mary, recently told ScreenRant about his next project and if he’s planning a sequel.

Weir is known for writing sci-fi books like The Martian, Artemis and Project Hail Mary.

I was so excited to hear that Andy Weir is working on a brand new novel! He told Liam Crowley at ScreenRant that it’s going to be another science fiction story, which is fantastic news. He’s keeping the details under wraps for now, but he did mention it will be a completely new adventure, not connected to any of his previous books like The Martian or Project Hail Mary. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

Yes, I’m currently writing my next book. It’s a science fiction story, and it’s a completely new idea – not a continuation of any previous work. I’m keeping details quiet for now.

Andy Weir, author of Project Hail Mary, says he doesn’t have a solid concept for a sequel yet, so he’s currently working on a different science fiction novel. He has some initial ideas, but they aren’t developed enough for him to start writing a second book.

He’s optimistic that he’ll eventually come up with a great idea for a story. And if he does make a sequel, he really wants it to be well-done.

I understand people have mentioned this, but I’m not ready to start working on a sequel yet. I’m currently focused on a different story. I have some promising ideas for a follow-up, but they’re not developed enough to begin. If I do decide to write a sequel, I want to make sure it’s really good.

Andy Weir’s debut novel, The Martian, originally published in 2011, tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney. After a massive windstorm, his crew mistakenly believes he’s dead and leaves him behind on Mars, forcing him to find a way to survive on his own.

I remember when The Martian finally hit the big screen four years after the book came out. Matt Damon was absolutely perfect as Watney, and the film really resonated with audiences and critics alike – it racked up seven Oscar nominations! Plus, it had a great awards season, taking home Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor (Damon, naturally) at the Golden Globes.

Eleven years after his last movie hit theaters, director Andy Weir is about to see his novel, Project Hail Mary, become a film.

Scheduled for release in 2026, Project Hail Mary is a highly anticipated film starring Ryan Gosling as a teacher with amnesia. He plays a biologist who lost his memory after an accident on a spaceship. The movie also features Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, Orion Lee, Liz Kingsman, and Aaron Neil.

The team behind popular movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and the Spider-Verse films – Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – brought Project Hail Mary to life. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, known for his work on Daredevil. Ryan Gosling joined Lord, Miller, and director James Weir as producers, along with Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Donnor.

Even before it officially came out, Project Hail Mary was already a hit. The trailer broke records last summer, becoming the most-watched trailer ever for an Amazon MGM Studios film with 400 million views in its first week.

Reviewers overwhelmingly love Project Hail Mary, giving it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s predicted to earn about $50 million in the US during its opening weekend, debuting alongside Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

Project Hail Mary will be released in theaters on Friday, March 20, 2026.
