The new animated film, which premiered last weekend to disappointing ticket sales, is receiving mixed reviews. Directed by Andy Serkis, it’s a fresh take on George Orwell’s classic 1945 story.
The movie Animal Farm was recently released. While critics gave it a low score of 24% on review websites, general audiences seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 62% approval rating.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been following the reaction to Andy Serkis’ Animal Farm, and a lot of the criticism seems to center on how the story was changed. It sounds like a lot of people who love the original Orwell book feel the adaptation softened the political message, making it more of a feel-good story than the biting satire it once was. They think it traded some of that powerful punch for something more easily digestible for a wider audience.
Orwell’s famous story is a witty critique of the political ideas of Joseph Stalin and his regime in Russia. It follows the animals on a farm who try to overthrow their human farmer and create a free society. Unfortunately, the pigs take control of the revolution, and the farm ultimately becomes just as oppressive as it was before, creating a bleak and unfair world.
Andy Serkis’ adaptation of Animal Farm includes a new storyline focused on growing up, and introduces characters like Lucky, a young pig voiced by Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things. Matarazzo is just one of several well-known actors providing voices for the film.
Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Andy Serkis, Kathleen Turner, and Iman Vellani are among the voice actors in Animal Farm. Despite criticism of the film itself, the voice cast has largely been well-received, with many actors earning praise for their work.
Animal Farm Could Have Been More True to Its Source Material

However, we quickly shifted gears,” Serkis explained. “We decided we wanted to reach a wider audience, including younger viewers, and animation felt like the ideal approach to achieve that.
Andy Serkis Is Already In Pre-Production on His Next Movie
Animal Farm is Andy Serkis’s fourth time directing a film, following Breathe (2017), Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). He’s currently working on his next project, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and will reprise his popular role as Gollum.
The upcoming Lord of the Rings film is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It will tell the story of Aragorn’s dangerous mission to capture Gollum, preventing him from revealing the Ring’s location to Sauron.
Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen, who starred in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, will reprise their roles as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum. Lee Pace is also returning as Thranduil, a character he first played in Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. Joining the cast are Leo Woodall as Halvard and Kate Winslet as Marigol.
Animal Farm is now playing in theaters.
