Andrew Scott’s “witty” new movie debuts with near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating
At the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, Andrew Scott’s latest film, titled “Blue Moon,” made its grand entrance with an almost flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes upon its debut.
According to IndieWire’s critic David Opie, the film “Blue Moon” portrays the story of American lyricist Lorenz Hart, battling alcoholism and striving to maintain his reputation during the premiere of “Oklahoma!” in 1943. This rendition aims to be more accessible and conversational.
In this production, Ethan Hawke portrays Hart while Scott assumes the role of Richard Rogers, Hart’s previous partner. The cast is further enriched by Margaret Qualley from “The Substance” and Bobby Cannavale known for his work as Ant-Man.
Under the guidance of director Richard Linklater, the movie “Blue Moon” has been well-received by critics. At this point in time, it boasts a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 professional reviews.
Here’s what’s been said about the film.
IndieWire
Ethan Hawke is equally captivating and powerful in his role, showcasing an electrifying energy that pulses like a choir member’s vibrato. His performance in this witty, seductive biopic could generate Oscar buzz for Richard Linklater.
The Independent
In the realm of Richard Linklater’s works, “Blue Moon” is relatively less impactful… While Ethan Hawke delivers an exceptional, eccentric, and brave performance, the production often feels like a stage play, with moments that can be quite stiff.
Variety
For insiders of Broadway, it’s an exceptional spectacle, while for newcomers, it serves as an enchanting initiation.
The Hollywood Reporter
Blue Moon appears simple at first glance, yet it’s skillfully crafted and richly layered, offering an intriguing complexity even though its narrative is relatively linear.
The Wrap
For 100 minutes, the play “Blue Moon” unfolds in a dramatically staged manner, mirroring its content as it portrays a disheartened protagonist who sees life as one grand performance on a stage, with his own curtain about to close.
The Daily Telegraph
Although cinematic depth may not be Richard Linklater’s strongest suit, the performances delivered by the cast are quite impressive.
The Lamplight Review
Hawke skillfully portrays Hart’s biting wit and wounded pride, making him at once the liveliest figure and the most melancholic spectacle in the scene… his sharpest lines still resonate as strikingly human.
The Times
In a notable turn for Ethan Hawke, his passionate portrayal in this biographical film about the Broadway composer Lorenz Hart is undermined by some implausible size-altering stunts, which feel rather far-fetched.
Blue Moon will be released in cinemas later this year.
