Andrew Scott’s “rousing” Ireland-set period drama is on TV tonight

Tonight, at 1:10am on Monday, the period drama “Jimmy’s Hall,” featuring Andrew Scott, will play on Film4. Later, you can also stream it on Channel 4’s online platform.

Renowned filmmaker Ken Loach is in charge of directing the production, with Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Jim Norton, and Denise Gough making up the rest of the talented cast.

Drawing inspiration from the real-life story of James “Jimmy” Gralton, a socialist who was the only Irish citizen expelled after the country gained independence, the movie portrays his unwavering efforts to open a community dance hall. However, this endeavor met with opposition from local clergy and authorities due to its controversial nature.

At the moment, Jimmy’s Hall has been awarded a Certified Fresh rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, mainly based on favorable reviews from film critics.

According to the BBC, this small-scale period drama carries a heartwarming and romantic vibe, and it delivers motivational themes about labor driven by ‘needs, not greed’. However, its stirring music is the only aspect that noticeably quickens one’s pulse.

The Associated Press stated that although this heartfelt, imaginative portrayal of an obscure underdog may not be helpful for trivia games, it’s still a compelling and compassionate tale about human resilience against oppression.

In agreement with their statement, The Independent noted that “Jimmy’s Hall” is among the brightest and most hopeful films in the filmography of Ken Loach.

Scott, known for his highly praised performances in ‘All of Us Strangers’ (2023) and ‘Ripley’ (2024), assumes the part of Father Seamus in the movie titled ‘Jimmy’s Hall‘ as a supporting character.

Director Loach shared with The Guardian about Jimmy Gralton’s true tale: “It encompassed so many aspects. It was about a place where one could be free, resistance, forward-thinking ideals, revolutionary thoughts, music, dancing, laughter, and joy – all in contrast to a suppressive society that aimed to stifle it.

Jimmy’s Hall is scheduled to broadcast on Film4 at 1:10 am on Monday, August 11th. After its initial airing, you can stream it on Channel 4’s online platform.

The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25”, is available! You can grab a copy at your local newsstands or purchase it online for only £8.99.
