After Timothée Chalamet sparked debate with some remarks about opera and ballet, Andrea Bocelli invited him to a concert.

The 30-year-old actor is hoping for a successful weekend at the Oscars, having been nominated for Best Actor three times. However, he recently sparked controversy by implying that people aren’t interested in classical art forms.

Adding his voice to the ongoing discussion, renowned opera singer Andrea, 67, suggested that a thoughtful actor like Timothée should appreciate the ‘beauty, truth, and emotion’ inherent in performance.

He believes that a thoughtful artist like Timothée Chalamet, who is attuned to feelings, might eventually realize that opera and dance share a similar emotional foundation.

Andrea then invited him to a concert, explaining that people tend to avoid things they don’t understand.

He explained that just a few minutes of listening to the music performed live is enough to reveal why it remains popular across the globe, even after hundreds of years.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Andrea explained that opera and ballet are timeless art forms that deeply resonate with people because they fulfill our fundamental desire for beauty, honesty, and emotional connection.

As a huge Timothée fan, I was really disheartened to see the criticism he’s getting. It all stems from some comments that recently resurfaced from a chat he had with Matthew McConaughey for Variety. It’s been tough to watch the backlash unfold, honestly.

In the video, the actor explained they didn’t want to work in fields like ballet or opera where the focus is just on maintaining something that’s lost its relevance or public interest.

I have all the respect in the world for ballet and opera fans, but I just lost a tiny bit of audience – only 14 cents worth! And honestly, I don’t even know why I’m bringing this up.

Ever since the video became popular, he’s faced criticism from all sides, even from those he admired, like ballet dancer Misty Copeland, who had previously supported his film, Marty Supreme, by sharing it with her followers.

During a discussion for Aveeno, she mentioned it was quite interesting that he asked her to help promote Marty Supreme, especially considering her work as an artist.

I believe it’s important to recognize that while this art form isn’t mainstream like movies, it still holds lasting cultural significance.

Just because something is popular doesn’t automatically mean it’s important or makes a real difference. Consider opera and ballet – they’ve endured for over 400 years, proving lasting value isn’t always about current trends.

Misty also argued that the Wonka star wouldn’t be where he is today without its impact.

She explained that he became an actor and achieved success in movies because of his background in opera and ballet, and that all performing arts deserve recognition without needing to be compared to each other.

The movie quickly became a major contender for this year’s Academy Awards, receiving nine nominations – including top categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor – as well as nods for Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Film Editing.

Timothée Chalamet’s nomination makes him the youngest actor in over 70 years – since Marlon Brando in the 1950s – to be nominated for Best Actor three times.

He received his first Oscar nomination in 2018 for his role in Call Me By Your Name, and was nominated again in 2025 for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He didn’t win last year, with Adrien Brody taking home the award for The Brutalist.

Michael Ball, a well-known star of London’s West End and celebrated for his powerful singing voice, has also criticized Timothée for his recent thoughtless remarks.

In a conversation with Gaby Roslin on Magic Radio, he explained that dancing and singing are fundamental to humanity – we’ve been doing it since the very beginning, and it’s something that will always be with us.

He has twice won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. 

Jamie Lee Curtis, the famous actress, along with singer Doja Cat and the dancers of London’s Royal Ballet, have publicly disagreed with statements made by Timothée.

Opera singer Isabel Leonard publicly criticized the character played by the Dune star, calling them uninspired and lacking in perspective.

Honestly, it really surprised me how someone who appears so accomplished could be so clumsy and limited in their thinking about art. It’s strange, because they actually see themselves as an artist – which, to me, feels like how an actor might think! It just doesn’t quite add up.

Timothée has previously been candid about the emotional sting of awards-season losses.

From the beginning of awards season, Timothée was the clear frontrunner, largely due to his performance in the popular movie Marty Supreme.

He seemed unbeatable after winning a Golden Globe in January, and he publicly thanked his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, during his acceptance speech.

Things are shifting quickly, and after Marty Supreme’s disappointing night at the BAFTAs – where it didn’t win any awards despite being nominated for eleven – some experts now think Timothée Chalamet might not win an Oscar this year, despite this being his third nomination.

Losing out at the Actor’s Awards amplified that buzz.

It’s been 20 years since George Clooney won an Oscar for Syriana despite not winning either the BAFTA or the Screen Actors Guild Award beforehand. He was the last actor to achieve this.

If he wins, following nominations for his work in A Complete Unknown and Call Me By Your Name, he would become the second-youngest person to ever win the Best Actor Oscar.
