Andor’s Cut Ghorman Story REVEALED! You Won’t Believe What Was Lost!
Showrunner Tony Gilroy talks about one of the abridged stories from season 2 of ‘Andor’, which spans over four years and culminates into the events seen in ‘Rogue One’. In this season, we witness the escalating conflicts and power struggles that eventually lead to the Ghorman Massacre. In episode 6 of ‘Andor’ season 2, the veteran rebel operatives Vel (played by Faye Marsay) and Cinta (Varada Sethu) spearhead the emerging resistance on Ghorman, orchestrating a heist to acquire Imperial weapons as proof that the Empire is planning a military conquest of their planet.
In an interview with Backstory Magazine, Tony Gilroy shared that originally, the weapons heist in the second season was planned as a train robbery, featuring a larger scale set piece. However, Gilroy explained that reducing it to a single-vehicle attack (essentially a truck heist) served the story better, even though money was initially the primary motivation behind this change. Here’s what he had to say:
This morning, it occurred to me that Beau [Willimon], Luke [Hull] and I weren’t just creating Palmo and the heist – the gun theft incident, you remember? The plan was to construct an economy for Ghorman, where all nine cities would send their Ghorman twill or silk (spider silk and weaves) to a massive railroad distribution center. This colossal planetary rail system ended outside Palmo, and our idea was to digitally enhance (CG) this project to create a train, essentially planning a train robbery. Beau and Luke spent a lot of time on this, looking at high-speed trains, types, and even the logistics of gun deliveries and hijackings. It seemed like a lucrative venture, but ultimately, we couldn’t make it happen.
Instead of featuring the K-2SO episode, we focused on the events surrounding the Ghorman Massacre and the Senate, which resulted in deeper character development. This approach gave us a greater depth compared to just providing visually stunning moments, in my opinion. It’s similar to how Aldhani became more intriguing due to its focus on characters rather than just visual spectacle.
What This Means For Andor
It Allows The Rebellion & Empire’s Plans For Ghorman To Take Center Stage
The plotline of the power struggles leading to the Empire’s conquest of Ghorman is grim, captivating, and meticulously crafted. Critics rave that episodes 7-9 of Andor, which delve into the Ghorman Massacre and its aftermath, are particularly chilling and stand out as the series’ best installments. Although the writers could have opted for a larger scale for the previous heist, this doesn’t diminish how these episodes portray Luthen Rael’s (played by Stellan Skarsgård) radical strategies. His aim is to sway the wealthy planet of Ghorman into joining the Rebellion, regardless of the price paid.
On the contrary, one character-focused aspect of the heist in Andor is the reunion between Vel and Cinta, which ultimately leads to Cinta’s untimely death. Some critics argue that Andor’s handling of Cinta’s demise reflects issues found in the “Bury Your Gays” trope, but Gilroy’s assertion that the character development was effectively portrayed isn’t entirely accurate. However, the scenes depicting the strife between the Ghor and other rebels were generally well-received, and it seems as if the train heist served to divert attention from this complex dynamic.
Our Take On Andor’s Cut Ghorman Story
As Much As We Would Have Liked To See It, Ghorman’s Arc Works As Is
Frankly speaking, the idea of a train heist in Andor seems quite intriguing, yet I must concede that if the narrative points remained identical (the Ghor merely reinforcing what was already known; Luthen aiding them for symbolic reasons disregarding potential damage), the series could have done without it. Additionally, I would have preferred Cinta’s demise to unfold differently, and there are instances where I believe this season could have been improved with additional episodes. However, it is almost universally acknowledged that Andor’s Ghorman storyline is already emotionally powerful and flawless.
