The acclaimed “Star Wars” TV series from Disney, known as Andor, has concluded following a two-season broadcast. Its producer, Tony Gilroy, has revealed an astonishing figure regarding the production costs associated with bringing Andor to life.
At a Q&A session during the ATX Television Festival, alongside writer Beau Willimon, Gilroy talked about the significant financial and ethical challenges they faced. “To put it bluntly, this amounts to $650 million for Disney,” he said. For 24 episodes, we didn’t take a single note from them. In the first season, we defied the Empire by saying “Fk the Empire,” and they asked us not to do that. In Season 2, they claimed streaming was no longer viable due to financial constraints, so we fought for our budget, but they never interfered with our creative process. That level of freedom comes with its own set of responsibilities.
The fact that Andor’s budget stands at $650 million might astonish some, given it’s more than triple the budget ($200 million) of the preceding movie. However, it’s important to note that while Rogue One had a relatively lengthy two-hour runtime, there are multiple episodes in the series, each one equivalent to a feature film in length. In other words, every few episodes, a self-contained story arc is concluded.
Moreover, the 2023 joint WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike pushed back the production of the show’s second season, leading to approximately $20 million in additional costs, raising the cost per episode for Season 2 to a similar level – much like the second season, which also faced delays. This substantial budget has been put to great effect, as Andor offers some of the most thrilling and visually spectacular espionage, space travel, and action in recent Star Wars on-screen adaptations.
Andor Has A Strong Politcal Message
Nonetheless, the series “Andor,” focusing on the protagonist who transitions from a thief to a rebel, has garnered much attention due to its political messaging. Regarding the application of the term “genocide” in the senate, Gilroy commented, “It’s truly disheartening to see how easily some people can insert this word into a context that matters to them. And, interestingly enough, I’ve been permitted to utilize the term ‘fascism’ over the past couple of weeks.

It’s quite freeing, but I don’t believe it should come as a shock or be overly confusing for people to grasp my path forward, which is crucial for expanding the reach and safeguarding the risk taken by this courageous company,” he continued.
Willimon commented that it was “touching to learn about the number of people who found inspiration” from the scene and Mothma’s impassioned address. He went on to say, “Rebellions are fueled by hope, don’t they? And hope isn’t something you just have; it’s something you must work for.
Both seasons of Andor are streaming on Disney+.
