Andor Twist: How The Rebels & Empire Secretly Want The Same Deadly Outcome On Ghorman

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Andor season 2, episodes 4-6.

In episode 6 of Andor, I witnessed the seeds of rebellion sprouting on Ghorman, signifying that the Empire and Luthen have both reached their sinister objectives, albeit for contrasting motives. Previously, in episode 3, the grim reality of the Rebellion was underscored when Brasso’s demise demonstrated that sacrifice is a bitter yet inevitable part of establishing Star Wars’ Rebel Alliance. The subsequent episodes, particularly numbers four through six, delve even deeper into this theme, offering an intriguing subplot for season 2 that resonates profoundly with me.

In the second season of Andor, the narrative shifts to the planet Ghorman. The initial part hinted at the Empire’s true intentions for Ghorman, while the later part emphasized the growing imperial occupation on the planet as well as resistance from the local rebels, the Ghorman Front. When Cassian becomes entangled in these events and the price of rebellion is underscored in the final moments of episode 6, it becomes increasingly evident that both the Empire and Luthen share a sinister objective.

The Empire & Luthen Both Have The Same Goal For Ghorman

Both Sides Are Benefitted By The Rebellion On Ghorman

Although Luthen and the Empire initially had a connection regarding Ghorman established as early as Andor season 1 and season 2’s premiere, it wasn’t until episode 6 that their shared objective became clear: acceleration. Essentially, Luthen is an ‘accelerationist rebel’, a term that signifies he deliberately exacerbates the situation on planets under Imperial control to ignite rebellion. In Andor season 2, Dedra follows the same approach. During the year between episodes 3 and 4, Dedra enforced the Empire’s rule over Ghorman, culminating in an act of open rebellion at the end of episode 6, which paradoxically allowed the Empire to tighten its grip on the planet.

In this scenario, the resistance takes a bold step by planning a theft to expose the Empire’s secret armory on Ghorman. The key figures in this operation are Andor characters Cinta and Vel, with Dedra privy to the plan to escalate the Empire’s influence on the planet. Despite Cassian warning Luthen that Ghorman may not be ready for open rebellion against the Empire, Luthen persisted, stating that if Ghorman were to suffer a fiery fate, it would serve as a powerful symbol of resistance for other planets to follow suit.

Rebellion Is Impossible Without The Most Heartbreaking Sacrifices

As Proven By Cinta’s Fate

In the third episode of season 2 of “Andor,” I was deeply moved by how sacrifices for the rebellion were underscored, particularly through Brasso’s and even Tay Kolma’s actions. Similarly, the poignant message from Cassian to Luthen about the Ghorman Front not being prepared for uprising resonated in a chilling manner in episode 6. This was tragically illustrated when internal strife and disagreements within the group led to an accidental blaster shot during the robbery of an Imperial transport. Sadly, Cinta took the brunt of this mishap, leading to her demise and causing immense sorrow for Vel.

In all his Star Wars works, including Rogue One and both seasons of Andor, Tony Gilroy consistently portrays the death of rebels. He does this to emphasize that rebellion often demands sacrifice, as it’s unlikely for oppressed people to overthrow a powerful government like the Empire without suffering losses. This is a recurring theme in Andor, making it one of Star Wars’ more mature and realistic TV shows, with characters such as Cinta making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the Ghorman Front achieves their mission.

Dedra & Syril’s Relationship Has Been Sacrificed To The Empire (But He Doesn’t Know It Yet)

Contrasting With The Likes Of Cassian & Bix

In the captivating sequences of Andor season 2 episodes 4 to 6, the bond between Syril and Dedra stands out as one of the intriguing aspects. This duo was particularly engaging during the initial arc of Andor season 2 due to the comedic portrayal of their relationship, notably their dinner with Syril’s mother. However, by the end of episode 6, their relationship takes a more sinister tone. Across these three episodes, it becomes evident that Syril is merely being used for Dedra’s Imperial aspirations.

Despite sharing some affection, it’s evident that Syril serves as a spy for Dedra, acting as her eyes and ears. However, what Dedra’s true motives regarding the planet remain hidden from Syril. Importantly, Syril was absent during Krennic’s clandestine gathering in the second season of ‘Andor’, indicating he lacks knowledge about the Empire’s plan to exploit Ghorman for kalkite. If Syril were to learn he has been manipulated by Dedra, their bond could be irreparably damaged, showing how both Imperials and rebels make sacrifices for their respective causes.

A New Generation Of Rebels Is Rising

With Cassian At The Center

In the final moments of episode 6 from season 2 of ‘Andor’, Cassian cautioned Luthen against the heist, but Luthen chose to proceed regardless. This serves as a subtle implication that while Luthen is effective in his actions, he isn’t the one who ultimately defeats the Empire. Instead, it’s a new generation of rebels, like Cassian, who play pivotal roles. It’s worth noting that Luthen was not present in the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy; instead, it was the organized Rebel Alliance that brought down Emperor Palpatine.

It appears that Cassian has demonstrated a closer affinity for these rebels compared to Luthen’s perspective, indicating his pivotal role in the emergence of a new rebel faction destined to overthrow the Empire. Cassian’s prediction about Ghorman not being prepared for rebellion turned out to be accurate, as the rebels and Luthen unwittingly aided Dedra. Although Luthen may gain from the escalation on Ghorman, it is Cassian’s more empathetic version of the Rebel Alliance that stands a better chance of triumphing against the Empire in the long run.

Star Wars Is Setting Up A Tragedy That Will Change The Galaxy

Ghorman Is On A Collision Course

A significant aspect of the ending in episode 6 of Andor season 2 that deserves discussion is the Ghorman Front and the potential catastrophe their actions may lead to, which seems reminiscent of a major Star Wars disaster. In the expanded Star Wars universe (Legends), the Ghorman Massacre was a tragic event where Wilhuff Tarkin’s Star Destroyer crushed hundreds of innocent protestors. However, in the main Star Wars timeline (canon), this incident has been slightly altered and is now known as the Tarkin Massacre, while the Ghorman Massacre is yet to occur.

In simple terms, Tony Gilroy revealed that the Ghorman Massacre will significantly impact the plot of Andor season 2, as even Star Wars Rebels confirms its occurrence in BBY 2. This event appears to drive Mon Mothma out of Coruscant due to escalating trouble on Ghorman in season 2, episode 6. The shape of the disaster in Andor season 2 is still unclear, but it’s evident that this tragic event sets the stage for a storyline with far-reaching consequences for the galaxy.
