Andor Showrunner Explains Why They Ignored Star Wars Rebels with Shocking Mon Mothma Twist!
Warning: SPOILERS for this week’s Andor episodes are ahead!
In the second episode of Season 2 for the series “Andor”, which aired according to the 2025 TV schedule, there was a portrayal of the Ghorman Massacre – an incident previously mentioned in Star Wars lore. During this event, Kyle Soller’s character, Syril Karn, lost his life tragically. The mass killing of innocents led Genevieve O’Reilly’s character, Mon Mothma, to publicly denounce Emperor Palpatine in the subsequent episode. Interestingly, fans of “Star Wars Rebels” might have observed that this scene differed from how the animated show depicted Mothma speaking out against the Empire. The creators of “Andor”, led by Tony Gilroy, revealed their reasoning behind deviating from established canon with this particular change.
As a dedicated Star Wars fan, let me share a fascinating tidbit about the series. In the “Star Wars Rebels” Season 3 episode titled “Secret Cargo”, Mon Mothma delivers a powerful speech condemning the Empire’s atrocities across the galaxy while being escorted to Yavin IV by Gold Squadron. Although this pivotal moment was set in motion after the events of the “Welcome to the Rebellion” episode, Tony Gilroy revealed to Entertainment Weekly that they, along with their writing partner Dan Gilroy, opted against having O’Reilly recite the identical speech in the upcoming series “Andor”. They wanted to introduce something fresh and captivating for the fans.
In the series, she is saved by the Gold Squadron. The speech they delivered in the cartoon, a recognized part of the storyline, is found aboard that vessel. Danny expresses his frustration, saying something along the lines of, “Must I adhere to this speech?
I have a knack for grasping different viewpoints, particularly from a literary standpoint. While the series “Andor” and “Rebels” are both part of the same “Star Wars” universe, they present themselves quite distinctly. Unlike “Rebels“, which caters to fans of all ages, “Andor” seems tailored towards older “Star Wars” enthusiasts due to its more complex narrative style. Consequently, although Mon Mothma’s speech in “Rebels” is fine, it was appropriate for Tony and Dan to create another speech that better aligns with the tone of “Andor“.
Disney+ is an essential service if you’re a fan of Star Wars movies and shows. You can explore a distant galaxy for as little as $9.99 per month with the ad-supported plan, or opt for an ad-free experience at $15.99 monthly. Alternatively, pre-pay for a year and save 16%, bringing the cost down to $159.99. Check out the deal here!
However, it’s important to note that the speech depicted in “Welcome to the Rebellion” doesn’t contradict the storyline of Star Wars Rebels. Instead, it is enriching and providing more depth to this specific segment of the Star Wars universe, as Tony Gilroy explained.
In a subtle manner, we’re downplaying certain aspects of the storyline in Star Wars Rebels, while maintaining continuity. Essentially, we’re hinting that there may be more to the story than what has been revealed so far.

In a recent interview, the showrunner, Andor Boss, clarified why the Star Wars character reappearing in Season 2 was recast. Despite the change, many fans, including myself, can’t help but miss the original actor.
In the original Star Wars series, Mon Mothma’s inaugural address to the Imperial Senate was interrupted by scenes featuring Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Bail Organa’s undercover agents. Although a complete speech was recorded and featured in “Welcome to the Rebellion,” Genevieve O’Reilly, who played Mothma, found it significant to recite the entire piece. Unfortunately, the broadcast of this first Senate address was abruptly terminated, necessitating Mothma to deliver her second speech from within Gold Squadron’s protection in a later episode.
In the upcoming three episodes of ‘Andor’, Mon Mothma goes into hiding from the Empire, allowing us to witness her transformation into the prominent Rebellion leader we’re familiar with. These episodes will seamlessly transition into the happenings of ‘Rogue One’, marking Cassian Andor’s first appearance on the big screen as this character since his scenes in ‘Revenge of the Sith’ were cut out.
