Andor season 2 opening was “head fake” for fans that complained, says show boss: “We can do whatever we want”

In an exclusive chat, Tony Gilroy, the director and storyteller behind Andor season 2, delves into the importance of the show’s initial scenes, offering insights for both the audience and the characters.

This week saw the return of the “Star Wars” series on Disney+, eighteen months following the season one finale. In these initial three episodes, viewers were swiftly immersed in the thrilling continuation of the story.

The opening episode kicks off featuring Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, secretly breaking into a cutting-edge military facility to acquire a model TIE fighter – a distinctive spacecraft that’s well-known in this universe.

In a moving address, Luna shares his thoughts with his base contact, successfully persuading her that her actions, despite defying the Empire, are indeed correct and justifiable.

In an exclusive conversation with Digital Spy, Gilroy suggested that the deliberate pacing and arrangement of the initial scene, which starts off leisurely then builds into action, was designed to deceive some viewers.

It’s also a trick for me, as it is for viewers, because I strive for something refined and appropriate at the start, and I don’t want to add music or any other elements.

I hope those who felt we were moving slowly earlier will now think, ‘Wow, we’re doing it again? Really!'” This version maintains the original intent and tone while using simpler language and a more conversational style.

Afterward, I’ll move on to another task, and we might have the opportunity to try something new. This demonstrates our adaptability and ability to accomplish anything necessary – in essence, it’s a bit like a feint or misdirection.

Gilroy further emphasized the significance of the scene for the main character, stating: “This scene achieves multiple objectives for me. Firstly, it underscores Cassian as a leader. Secondly, it highlights his growth – something he wouldn’t have been capable of delivering that speech before.

I can emphasize the importance of joining the rebellion using the young woman as an example. Since she’s preparing to perform her first act of defiance, her life will undergo a transformation. From then on, she’ll always be living in hiding – it takes bravery for her.

Andor season two is available now on Disney+ with new episodes releasing each Wednesday.
