The team behind The Expanse is creating a new science fiction show for Prime Video that appears to blend the styles of Andor and Mass Effect. It’s a bit surprising they’re starting a new series, considering The Expanse didn’t fully adapt all of the original books it was based on.
The book series the new show is based on, The Captive’s War, is also written by the creators of The Expanse – Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Currently, The Captive’s War consists of two novels and one short story, with a third novel planned to complete the series. This provides enough content for at least three seasons of the show.
I’m really excited about the upcoming Captive’s War adaptation! Knowing that Naren Shankar and Breck Eisner – the team behind The Expanse – are working on it is a huge relief, and even better, the authors of the books, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, are writing for the show directly. It’s all looking incredibly promising and gives me high hopes that it will be just as good as The Expanse!
What’s really interesting is that The Captive’s War appears to combine the best elements of both Andor and Mass Effect.
The Captive’s War’s Andor & Mass Effect Parallels Explained
Both Andor and The Captive’s War are epic space operas with grand stories, but at their heart, they focus on how power and official processes work. They slowly reveal the everyday struggles of living under colonial rule.
They navigate the consequences of dominance, from the way powerful systems erase local traditions to the new social rankings that emerge when one group takes control.
Similar to the show Andor, The Captive’s War doesn’t focus on traditional sci-fi heroes or epic battles. Instead, it realistically depicts the messy, complicated nature of rebellion, where difficult choices and compromises are often necessary, even if they don’t feel right in the moment.
While Andor and The Captive’s War are distinct stories, they share a powerful connection through their depictions of how empires control people and how ordinary citizens fight back.
The novel The Captive’s War shares common ground with Mass Effect in its depiction of a vast and frightening alien enemy, the Carryx. Like the Reapers in Mass Effect, the Carryx operate with a completely different sense of morality than humans. Both stories also feature a wide variety of alien races, positioning humanity as a relatively new arrival in long-established galactic communities.
The authors of both The Captive’s War and The Expanse noted similarities between The Captive’s War and Mass Effect, as reported by WinterIsComing. They pointed out that The Captive’s War is a space opera filled with diverse aliens, creating a sense of unpredictable discovery with each turn of the page.
Prime Video’s The Captive’s War aims to be a unique series, and could really stand out if done right. While it shares some similarities with shows like Andor and Mass Effect, those connections actually add to the anticipation.
Captive’s War’s Andor & Mass Effect Parallels Prove It’ll Be Nothing Like The Expanse
Daniel Abraham, the author, has called The Captive’s War “the flip side of the space opera coin from The Expanse.” Since it’s being made by the same people who created The Expanse, viewers are likely to notice similarities between the two shows. The shared writers will also naturally lead audiences to draw comparisons between the adaptations.
While sharing some elements of space opera, The Captive’s War will feel distinct from The Expanse. Instead of focusing on large-scale political conflicts between groups, it will create a more personal and intense story about what it’s like to live under colonial control.
Unlike The Expanse, which mainly dealt with conflicts between humans and used the Protomolecule as a secondary threat, The Captive’s War revolves around a truly powerful alien enemy. This enemy is so overwhelming that it pushes the human characters to question what it means to be human and how much control they have over their own fates, all in a desperate fight for survival.
With the popularity of The Expanse and the strong foundation of the The Captive’s War novels, the new Prime Video series looks very promising. The show shares similarities with hits like Andor and Mass Effect, which is generating a lot of excitement.
