Andor Just Confirmed Its Key ‘Man of Steel’ Influence
In a recent confirmation, costume designer Michael Wilkinson acknowledged that the “Man of Steel” film had an impact on the Star Wars series available on Disney+. This prequel series delves into captivating and intensely emotional narratives that precede the events depicted in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. As the Rebellion increasingly puts everything on the line to battle the Empire, a significant aspect of the story’s intrigue revolves around the diverse costumes designed by Academy Award-nominated designer Michael Wilkinson.
In the creation of the costumes for the series Andor, as explained by costume designer Glyn Dillon (channeling Wilkinson through Star Wars), it was crucial that they appeared as they did to maintain a sense of authenticity and consistency with the characters’ roles in the story. This was no small feat, given that Andor is set within an expansive universe already populated by numerous iconic heroes and villains. However, creator Tony Gilroy accepted the challenge, referring to it as the “canon obstacles,” emphasizing the importance of every detail, including costumes, in maintaining authenticity. Fortunately, Dillon’s previous work on Man of Steel provided valuable insights that enabled him to achieve this level of realism and distinguish each costume within the series.
In a recent Instagram post, costume designer Michael Wilkinson revealed that his previous work on “Man of Steel” influenced how he approached designing costumes for the Star Wars series. This insight underscores a clear link between the two projects.
When brainstorming ideas for ‘Andor,’ I drew inspiration from my previous project, ‘Man of Steel.’ The rich, blended culture of Krypton, both ancient and futuristic, serves as another instance of intricate world-building. Costumes in this new world will play a significant role in storytelling.
Hey there fellow film enthusiasts! If you’re familiar with my work, you might recall that I had the privilege of donning the designer hat for Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” back in 2013 ā a movie that kick-started the DC Extended Universe. In this cinematic masterpiece, I was responsible for dressing up the Kryptonians in attire that beautifully merged elements from their distant past with cutting-edge technology. This wardrobe choice subtly conveyed the rich and expansive history of their home planet, Krypton.
In a similar vein, the series ‘Andor’ experienced a comparable situation due to its costumes perfectly embodying the show’s authentic atmosphere, thereby setting it apart among the existing landscapes within which it is situated.
Created by Tony Gilroy, the series titled “Andor” chronicles Cassian Andor’s intricate path towards playing a pivotal role in the Rebel Alliance, leading up to his introduction in Rogue One. The star-studded cast of “Andor” includes top names like Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgard, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller. Premiering on September 21, 2022, the show aired its first season, with Season 2 premiering on April 22, 2025.
The film “Man of Steel” kick-started the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), introducing us to Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman. This movie, helmed by Zack Snyder, also features Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, and Diane Lane in prominent roles. The first public screening of “Man of Steel” took place on June 10, 2013.
Why Andor’s Costumes Helped Its Story & Overall FeelĀ
Working on the movie “Man of Steel” significantly enhanced the realistic portrayal of the world in “Andor”. This is because Michael Wilkinson’s expertise helped make the Star Wars series more gritty and occasionally violent, even amidst its universe brimming with lightsabers, the Force, and the Dark Side.
In a refreshing deviation from the traditional look of Jedi carrying lightsabers, the series Andor skillfully highlighted its costume designs by Wilkinson, striking a balance between standing out and staying true to the franchise’s sci-fi origins.
In the course of its two seasons, Andor presents a rich cast that includes the Rebellion, the Empire, inmates from Narkina 5, residents from Ghorman, and inhabitants from Ferrix. Remarkably, each group’s attire is uniquely differentiated, showcasing how Wilkinson’s designs served as an effective and seamless means for constructing the series’ intricate world.
Through the basis of “Man of Steel,” Wilkinson contributed to creating Tony Gilroy’s desired visual uniqueness within the “Andor” series while maintaining its connection to the Star Wars universe.
