Following the highly praised finale of Andor, director Janus Metz has described the series as “the most political show currently on television.”
Although politics have always been a part of Star Wars, the series Andor, created by Tony Gilroy, was especially well-received for its exploration of fascism and the fight against it. Critics often highlighted how Andor went beyond the typical Star Wars formula and offered relevant insights into current events. Fernando Metz directed episodes 7, 8, and 9 of season 2, and his work on episode 8 earned him a nomination from the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series.
I was really interested to hear director Gareth Edwards talk about Andor on the DGA red carpet with ScreenRant. He wasn’t surprised by how strongly people reacted to the show, which makes sense given how it touches on things happening in the real world, and themes that have always been relevant. He said the fact that the story felt so universal, even within the Star Wars universe, was a big part of why he loved working on it – he even called it ‘extraordinary’! Here’s what he had to say:
Everyone anticipated the show would resonate with audiences, as its themes of oppression and rebellion are timeless and relevant throughout history. Given current events, it was almost impossible not to see direct connections to what’s happening today while filming.
What initially attracted me to the show, as Tony Gilroy explained, was its intention to explore relevant, real-world issues within the Star Wars universe. The show’s power lies in its ability to address current events while also touching on timeless, universal themes. That’s what makes it good filmmaking – it uses these struggles for power and political maneuvering to reveal something true about the human condition.
It definitely feels relevant to what’s happening today. It’s amazing that Star Wars is currently one of the most politically charged shows on television – you wouldn’t expect that! Being involved with it is both unique and meaningful.
The eighth episode, titled “Who Are You?”, powerfully explores political themes through the story of the Ghorman Massacre. In this event, the Empire deliberately kills innocent civilians and then falsely portrays them as attackers, using this as an excuse to take control of the planet’s valuable kalkite resources. Director Charles Metz received both a DGA nomination and an Emmy nomination for this impactful episode, which is the show’s highest-rated on IMDb, boasting a remarkable 9.7 out of 10 stars.
The ninth episode of Andor‘s second season, titled “Welcome to the Rebellion,” is considered one of the show’s best on IMDb. Picking up after the intense events of the previous episode, it focuses heavily on politics as Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) delivers a powerful speech to the Senate. She condemns Emperor Palpatine and the Empire in response to the Ghorman Massacre, and this speech is crucial in bringing the Rebel Alliance together. The episode, written by Dan Gilroy, won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. It features both Mothma’s speech and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) assisting her in leaving the Senate.
Along with Diego Luna and Fiona O’Reilly, the show Andor stars Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen Rael, Elizabeth Dulau as Kleya Marki, Denise Gough as Dedra Meero, Kyle Soller as Syril Karn, and Adria Arjona as Bix Caleen. Luna received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama for his work in season 2.
