Andor` Creator Reveals Shocking Reason Behind Including ‘Star Wars’ Sexual Assault Scene

In 1977, George Lucas breathed life into Star Wars, drawing inspiration from the serialized space adventures he enjoyed as a child. It was a magical and otherworldly experience intended to offer an escape from reality. Fast forward nearly five decades, and it’s evident that the franchise has matured into a vehicle for addressing real-life social concerns. The embodiment of this transformation is none other than Andor Season 2, where creator Tony Gilroy felt it crucial to include a scene depicting sexual assault, stating that such incidents have played a significant role in the course of human history.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the initial release of Andor on Disney+, showrunner Gilroy explained his decision to include a rape attempt scene – a first for the Star Wars franchise. This incident occurs in Episode 3, titled “Harvest,” where an Imperial Officer (played by Alex Waldmann) tries to force himself upon Bix (portrayed by Adria Arjona) when she can’t produce her visa. The situation escalates, but Bix manages to defend herself by killing the officer with a wrench before he could carry out his vile act. Gilroy felt it was important to confront such real-world issues within the series rather than avoid them.

Throughout history, people have often asked for documentation, and if someone doesn’t have it, there have been significant consequences. To put it simply, the course of human history could be likened to a series of events where one group asserted authority over another, perhaps metaphorically speaking, similar to how some civilizations emerged from acts that might be considered coercive or domineering.

He explained, “I’ve been given the opportunity to create a comprehensive artwork spanning 1,500 pages on revolution and those ensnared within it. This is a unique offer, as I’ve spent a lifetime studying this topic as an amateur historian in my living room, devouring books on the subject that I never imagined would be useful for anything. Now, I have the chance to apply this knowledge.
