Andor Creator Admits Aliens Were Missing

One captivating aspect of the Star Wars universe lies in its diverse alien inhabitants. Although human characters usually take center stage, it doesn’t take long to find them accompanied by vibrant extraterrestrials, ranging from Chewbacca and Yoda. However, when we delve into the world of Andor, which debuted its second season this week as per the 2025 television schedule, there are far fewer alien creatures to observe. This is a noticeable difference that showrunner Tony Gilroy, who developed the Disney+ exclusive series, has acknowledged during an interview with TopMob.

Gilroy addressed this topic with our own Jeff McCobb while he was seated next to Mon Mothma actress Genevieve O’Reilly, who discussed her character’s drunken dance sequence in “Harvest.” When Jeff asked Gilroy if he noticed that Andor doesn’t include as many aliens compared to other Star Wars projects, the showrunner answered:

Yes, I must admit I feel quite vulnerable regarding this matter. We’ve been making constant efforts, exploring numerous aspects. There seem to be more complexities this season than before. Frankly, I’m always striving for improvement. This issue is constantly occupying my thoughts.

To me, the series Andor has a strong resemblance to Battlestar Galactica, as it shares the same space opera genre but lacks the presence of extraterrestrial beings that were characteristic of the latter. However, this absence doesn’t seem to have impacted the success of the show, as evident from the numerous positive reviews for Andor‘s second season. What sets it apart is its profound focus on human characters and their struggles, whether we’re referring to the members of the Rebellion during Cassian Andor’s time or the inhabitants of diverse planets featured in the show.

With Disney+, immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe whenever you want! The entry to this incredible cosmic adventure starts at just $9.99 a month for their ad-supported plan. For an uninterrupted experience, opt for $15.99 a month or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually and enjoy the force for a whole year! Check out the deal here.

In Season 2, it was noticeable that the showrunner put in extra effort to introduce more alien characters. When Jeff McCobb commented that fewer aliens contributed to a more “authentic and earthly” feel, which is what he appreciated about Rogue One, Gilroy responded:

They have a potent taste that immediately changes the dynamic, requiring great caution in their use.

Later on, Jeff expressed that this method would make it “more significant” when extraterrestrials eventually appear, and Gilroy concurred. With only nine more episodes left in Season 2 of Andor, I’m eager to see what alien species will emerge as the series delves into the Rebellion and Empire years before the events in Rogue One. Regrettably, our time with the Andor group is limited, as three episodes are being aired each week.

Therefore, our current series concludes on Tuesday, May 13th. Following this, the next “Star Wars” TV series yet to be announced is “Ahsoka” Season 2, and as of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date for it.
