Andor
In 2016’s “Rogue One,” fans of “Star Wars” were introduced to Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna. This stoic captain was a well-developed revolutionary who was willing to give his life for his beliefs. Regrettably, in that film, he fulfills his tragic fate, sacrificing himself along with his team to retrieve the Death Star intelligence that ultimately enabled the Rebel Alliance to conquer the Galactic Empire in the Battle of Yavin as depicted in “A New Hope.
In the prequel series “Andor” – widely regarded as one of, if not the best Star Wars TV shows on Disney+ – we encounter Cassian five years prior to his momentous mission, where he’s merely a self-serving smuggler trying to make ends meet amidst the Empire’s tight grip. The show kicks off with Cassian eliminating two minor Imperial agents in search of leads about his missing sister, an action that triggers a sequence of events gradually transforming him from a skeptical hired gun into a passionate rebel fighter.
In the realm of Star Wars storytelling, Tony Gilroy’s (known for his work in the Bourne franchise and Rogue One) Emmy-nominated series, Andor, stands out as a more mature, gritty take. Instead of the classic good versus evil battles that characterize the Skywalker saga, Andor delves into the human toll of rebellion and the unyielding struggles against an oppressive regime. As Luthen Rael, a ruthless rebel spymaster portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård, eloquently puts it in Season 1, “I’m forced to employ my enemy’s tools to vanquish them. I sacrifice my integrity for someone else’s tomorrow. I sacrifice my life to bring about a dawn I know I won’t witness.
Before the initial three episodes of Andor’s Season 2 debut on Disney+, here are some key points you might want to familiarize yourself with.
Where Andor Season 1 left off
As a devoted cinephile, I found myself immersed in the 12 captivating episodes of Andor Season 1, which transported me across a year in a galaxy far, far away. My character, Cassian, was initially forced into the rebellion for self-preservation, but his journey transformed him into a steadfast resistance operative. Pivotal events, such as enduring torture in an Imperial prison, uncovering a message from my late adoptive mother Maarva (Fiona Shaw), and witnessing the brave uprising of Ferrix against their oppressors while saving my childhood friend Bix (Adria Arjona) from Imperial grasp, fueled my dedication to the rebellion’s cause.
In summary, Cassian’s storyline in Season 1 culminated with him facing off against Luthen, who intended to silence his former recruit to protect rebel secrets. However, instead of killing or capturing Cassian, Luthen was shown smiling, implying that he had anticipated Cassian’s change of heart. In a scene after the credits rolled, it was revealed that the enigmatic devices the prisoners at the Imperial prison, including Cassian, were building were actually parts for the Death Star.
In the initial season of Andor, we explored the differing opinions among the early rebellion leaders, such as Luthen, Senator Mon Mothma (portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly), and rebel fighter Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). Their contrasting strategies for managing the movement led to separate rebel groups that hadn’t yet united under a single flag, causing previous alliances to falter.
What to expect in Season 2
In contrast to its first season, the concluding 12-episode run of Andor will delve into a four-year timeframe instead of just one. This implies that the series will wrap up approximately when the storyline of Rogue One commences. Similar to its precursor, Season 2 is structured into arcs consisting of three episodes each, with fresh installments airing weekly every Tuesday until May 13th. Each arc represents an in-universe year and portrays a span of three consecutive days in the lives of the principal characters.
Gilroy expressed that he didn’t want each initial scene of every subsequent year in the series to revolve around phrases like “Since last I saw you,” “You cut your hair,” or “Now you’re a doctor.” He felt these were typical, expository dialogues, reminiscent of Chekhov’s gun, which he aimed to avoid. Instead, he wanted to create a unique setup where certain key events are understood without explicit dialogue, leaving some details unsaid, as the storytellers and actors can fill in the blanks themselves.
Gilroy mentioned that a key event in Season 2 is the notorious Ghorman Massacre, a significant incident hinted at in various Star Wars books and comics as a crucial point in the rebellion’s timeline. This massacre involves the Empire brutally killing thousands of peaceful protesters on the planet Ghorman. This horrific act serves as the catalyst for Mon Mothma to bring together the scattered rebel groups, forming the Rebel Alliance.
In addition, some characters from Rogue One that you may recognize will appear, such as Orson Krennic, the Imperial Military’s Director of Advanced Weapons Research (played by Ben Mendelsohn), and K-2SO, Cassian’s witty co-pilot droid (voiced by Alan Tudyk). However, not every character from the past that you might anticipate will be present.
In simpler terms, Gilroy mentioned to the Hollywood Reporter that there might have been a few individuals we wanted present at Yavin who appeared in “Rogue” initially, but unfortunately, we couldn’t secure them as they were occupied.
