And Just Like That star claims being WOKE got them axed from SATC reboot
A performer featured on HBO’s And Just Like That has shared insights about their absence in the Sex and the City spin-off, attributing it to their increased awareness and sensitivity towards social issues.
53-year-old comedian Bobby Lee portrayed Jackie Nee during the initial two seasons, but his character’s plotline ended as Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) decided to reorient her professional path.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lee expressed his conviction that he was dismissed from the show, alongside other progressive aspects, as well.
In simple terms, he said, ‘Certain progressive aspects of the series were removed, and I believe I played a role in that. This was shared with a magazine at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 on July 24.’
In addition to discussing other topics, he mentioned the departure of Sara Ramirez. The 49-year-old actor, who identifies as non-binary and prefers they/them pronouns, did not reappear in season 3. This was after their character, Che Diaz, faced widespread criticism for being perceived as ‘annoying’ by viewers.
Lee expressed that he believes Sara Ramirez did not return for the show, along with some others. He mentioned an attempt to include more minority characters, but he isn’t sure about it because he hasn’t seen the program himself.
DailyMail.com has reached out to HBO’s representatives for comment.
Lee starred as Jackie Nee, Carrie’s podcast co-host, on the first and second seasons of the show.
As Carrie switched her role from podcast host to novelist, it wrapped up Lee’s storyline and signified the conclusion for her fellow podcasters, namely Franklin Silvias (portrayed by Ivan Hernandez) and Chloe (performed by Ali Stroker).
Although he left the show, Lee cherishes his time there deeply, referring to his fellow actor Parker as “the kindest individual I’ve encountered,” expressing that she made him feel incredibly comfortable.
‘Everyone on there is likeable, the experience was enjoyable. I don’t hold grudges against anyone. You get the gist, right? I’m generally a friendly person, and I always make it a point to be punctual.’
Lee also joked that he doesn’t ‘even know why they asked’ him to star on the show.
Initially, I felt quite apprehensive as it didn’t align with my usual work. Hope you understand! Nonetheless, I took the plunge and faced my fears.
Lee previously shared how the show helped him get sober.
He recollected visiting that place under the influence of alcohol and drugs, struggling to comprehend the script due to his intoxicated state. Reflecting upon himself, he muttered, “This won’t happen again. I need to get sober. This is madness,” as he expressed during a 2023 podcast.

Alongside Lee, the series also bid farewell to Karen Pittman, who played Nya Wallace, a character who became Miranda’s friend and professor, as well as Ramirez’s character, Che, who was the contentious love interest for Miranda Hobbes, portrayed by Cynthia Nixon.
In early January, it was reported by DailyMail.com that Ramirez was no longer part of the cast. This was due to the perception among some that her character was unnecessary and grating for viewers to watch.
This occurred subsequent to Ramirez strongly indicating that their tenure on the program might be concluded due to their pro-Palestinian viewpoints.
However, a reliable insider about the show playfully dismissed the idea, stating that Ramirez’s role had been at risk since the previous season. This was due to the fact that their character had lost its significance and became increasingly irritating.
According to their exclusive statement to DailyMail.com, Sara wasn’t let go due to her backing of Palestine during the ceasefire. Instead, they stated that Sara was dismissed because Charles had stopped contributing to the program effectively. The decision to terminate her employment had been pending since the previous season.
Ever since Che parted ways with Miranda, I’ve found myself yearning for the good old days when their dynamic sparkled on screen. But now, their character seems devoid of charm, and honestly, it annoys me a bit. The storyline focusing on them as a struggling comedian just feels like wasted minutes, and deep down, I know it’s true.
As a devoted admirer, I must say, Sara, it’s crucial for you to understand that we’re not in Grey’s Anatomy anymore, and your character may not have been the central focus of the narrative as it unfolded.
In the spin-off series, a fresh character named Che was introduced. They identified as a ‘nonbinary individual of Mexican and Irish descent, often flamboyant and fabulous.’ After Miranda ended her marriage with Steve Brady, she developed a relationship with this new acquaintance.
In the show, the character faced criticism for being the most disliked among viewers, who enjoyed seeing Miranda, portrayed by Kristin Davis, reconnecting with Carrie and Charlotte York again.
Audience members found the character off-putting, and some criticized them for potentially slowing down the progress of non-binary representation by approximately seven decades.

On Instagram following the Emmy Awards, Ramirez seemed to allege that the show had let them go due to their political beliefs, in a passionate outburst.
They commented that our sector often appears deceptive. While it may seem generous by handing out awards, casting directors and agents secretly maintain blacklists of actors and workers who express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, ensuring these individuals won’t be hired again in the future.
And Just Like that premiered in 2021 and is currently on its third season.
The show airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
