An “unshakeable” horror with Toby Jones that’s “like nothing else you’ve ever seen” is streaming for free

Toby Jones’ chilling horror film, titled “Berberian Sound Studio“, can be streamed for free now, following its broadcast on Channel 4.

Under the guidance of director Peter Strickland, who previously worked on the unsettling haunted garment horror film “In Fabric“, “Berberian Sound Studio” is a tribute to the Italian giallo films popular in the 1960s and 70s.

2012’s horror movie was shown last night on Film4, and you can now watch it for free on Channel 4’s streaming service.

In the 1970s, the movie “Berberian Sound Studio” is set in an Italian horror film studio. The story revolves around Gilderoy, a British sound engineer, who has been recruited to work on a giallo film by its director, Giancarlo Santini, a well-known B-horror filmmaker (played by Antonio Mancino).

In astonishment at the brutal scenes in the film, Gilderoy is tasked with creating authentic squishing and tormenting sounds by employing a variety of vegetables and common household items for sound effects.

In a growing tension filled with the oppressive vibe of a giallo film, the sound technician succumbs to the relentless studio demands and employs questionable, cruel methods to finish the production.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the enigmatic Berberian Sound Studio is currently earning high praise on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a critics’ consensus rating of 85%! However, it seems the general audience response hasn’t quite matched this level of admiration, with an audience score of only 53%.

In a 2012 review by The Irish Times, Berberian Sound Studio was characterized as an unparalleled cinematic experience, with a unique focus not just on what you see but primarily on the sounds you hear.

As I played through this cinematic adventure, it felt like stepping into a haunting, Lynchian-inspired nightmare, filled with paranoid suspense that sometimes teetered on the edge of too much. Yet, despite its intense nature, it left an indelible mark on me and proved to be undeniably compelling.

Berberian Sound Studio is streaming on Channel 4.

As an avid fan, I can’t help but share the excitement – Digital Spy’s inaugural print magazine is finally here! Grab your copy of “British Comedy Legends” from your local newsagents or order it online for a steal at only £3.99!
