An early idea for Star Trek: Voyager episode gave Janeway and Chakotay a family together
As a long-time Star Trek: Voyager fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment every time I rewatch the “Resolutions” episode. This installment, which explores the potential romantic connection between Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran), has always left me wanting more.
Among Star Trek: Voyager fans who root for the possible romance between Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran), “Resolutions” is a beloved episode from season two. In this installment, due to contracting a lethal virus for the rest of the crew, Janeway and Chakotay are compelled to stay on a planet.
In this scene, the audience believed it was an opportunity for Kathryn and Chakotay to act on their emotions since they were simply identified by their first names rather than their ranks. However, as reported by Whatculture, Jeri Taylor, the episode’s writer, intended to keep their relationship strictly platonic and showcase only a deep friendship between them.
As a big fan of Voyager, I’m always excited to learn about the creative ideas pitched by writers like Ken Biller. One intriguing proposal he made involved adding an element of time travel to the show. If this concept had been implemented, Janeway and Chakotay would have aged forty years within a single episode! Can you imagine the romance that would have unfolded over those decades? They would have built a family together as the years passed before our very eyes. It’s like watching an entire lifetime of love story unfold in just one captivating episode of Voyager. What a fascinating way to explore their relationship!
Biller’s suggestion wasn’t implemented, likely due to its resemblance to “The Inner Light” episode. This missed opportunity might have provided some resolution for fans longing for a romantic connection between the captain and her first officer. The “Resolutions” episode aimed to dispel any rumors of a relationship, but it couldn’t extinguish the undeniable chemistry or quell fan speculation.
With Janeway and Chakotay returned to Star Trek: Prodigy, there’s a possibility that their relationship may progress further if the show gets renewed for a third season. Even if their romantic development occurs towards the end of the series, it might be beneficial that we didn’t witness their entire love story in just one episode.
