In this scene, the audience believed it was an opportunity for Kathryn and Chakotay to act on their emotions since they were simply identified by their first names rather than their ranks. However, as reported by Whatculture, Jeri Taylor, the episode’s writer, intended to keep their relationship strictly platonic and showcase only a deep friendship between them.
As a big fan of Voyager, I’m always excited to learn about the creative ideas pitched by writers like Ken Biller. One intriguing proposal he made involved adding an element of time travel to the show. If this concept had been implemented, Janeway and Chakotay would have aged forty years within a single episode! Can you imagine the romance that would have unfolded over those decades? They would have built a family together as the years passed before our very eyes.
