Amy Dowden demands action after cruel trolls branded her a ‘narcissist and attention seeker’ amid gruelling breast cancer battle
As a dedicated follower and admirer of Amy Dowden’s strength and resilience, I cannot help but be moved by her heartrending journey through breast cancer. Her story is a testament to the indomitable spirit that lies within each one of us, a spirit that refuses to back down in the face of adversity.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d like to share a personal experience that resonates deeply with me. Similar to how I advocate for self-care and resilience in the face of adversity, I personally experienced the harsh realities of online trolling while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
2023 saw the world of a professional Strictly dancer spiraling when, just a day after returning from her honeymoon with spouse Ben Jones, she received a cancer diagnosis.
2021 turned out to be the most challenging year for Amy, aged 34. During this period, she went through a mastectomy, chemotherapy, as well as fertility treatments. Additionally, she came very close to succumbing to sepsis.
Now, the star is urging immediate steps to curb internet bullies who maliciously labeled her as ‘self-centered and seeking attention’ amidst difficult circumstances.
In an upcoming BBC documentary, as excerpts suggest from my personal account, I candidly shared: “At times, steroid use would disrupt my sleep pattern, finding myself awake at 2 am. I felt so low during those moments, and receiving those messages only made it more heart-wrenching. It’s just not widely discussed enough.”
Amy advocates that the most severe internet trolls should be subjected to criminal penalties, as she disclosed her awareness of how cyberbullying can lead some teenagers to suicide.
She added: ‘When someone is bullying someone online and they take their own life, it’s kind of like manslaughter. Is there going to be punishment to stop people doing it? It’s awful.’
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that as follows:
Following her decision to shave off her hair and performing on Strictly without a wig, Amy openly confessed that she had encountered hurtful and unkind remarks as well.
Additionally, she drew strength from her parents, her husband Ben, and her fellow Strictly cast members during this challenging time. However, she also disclosed that some acquaintances who had been present at her wedding had distanced themselves following her diagnosis, which occurred soon after her marriage.
On Monday, August 26, Amy’s BBC documentary will be aired, capturing her journey during an extremely challenging year as the cameras trail alongside her.
The dancer is now getting ready for this year’s Strictly following her enforced hiatus from the program last season.
Amy has confessed that the thought of losing her job on the BBC dance show was her greatest fear.
In a clip published by The Sun, Amy shared: “I found myself questioning, ‘Am I allowed to keep my job?’ as that was my greatest fear.”
1) To achieve excellence in dancing, your physical fitness needs to match that of an athlete. I was anxious about how the treatment might impact my physique.
She expressed that the treatment left her drained, saying, “I was crushed. It absolutely drained me of energy for Strictly. I was devastated because I really wanted to dance.”
Previously, as a newlywed preparing for my honeymoon, I was embarking on a thrilling new phase of my life a year ago. However, the discovery of a lump in my breast altered the course of my journey entirely.
At my current stage of life, I never imagined I’d face a cancer diagnosis. Even with relatives and acquaintances who had overcome cancer, I was unprepared for the full extent of its influence on my personal journey.
On this personal journey, I’ve gained profound insights into myself and the impact of a cancer diagnosis. My heartfelt wish is that this film provides hope and fortitude for others, inspiring them to perform regular self-examinations regardless of their age.
Following the announcement of her comeback earlier this month, Amy expressed her joy on Instagram about resuming activities she cherishes. This news arrived mere days after she celebrated the one-year milestone since her initial surgery, which followed her diagnosis.
“She expressed her joy and gratitude, saying, ‘My heart is overflowing with happiness to be back on @bbcstrictly!’ She added that this team is simply exceptional, both on and off the dance floor.”
She exclaimed: ‘I’m thrilled beyond words to return soon to my favorite activity – dancing! I feel incredibly fortunate and more exhilarated than ever before. Here it comes! Many thanks to @bbcstrcitly for your constant support. Oh my goodness, I can hardly wait! #amysback’
The dancer’s fellow professionals were quick to share their delight at the news of her return.
1. Dianne Buswell expressed her joy by saying, ‘I’m so glad you’re here where you should be ❤️,’ and Graziano Di Prima responded with a similar sentiment, ‘Absolutely ❤️.’
