Amy Dowden breaks down in tears over cruel comments from trolls who branded her a 'narcissist' for sharing her breast cancer journey

As I delve into Amy Dowden’s heart-wrenching story, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of empathy for this remarkable woman. Her journey, filled with trials and tribulations, is a testament to her resilience and strength.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but feel emotional as I recount Amy Dowden’s heart-wrenching account of the cruel trolling she faced during the revelation of her breast cancer journey in her recent documentary.

2023 saw the life of the celebrated Strictly Come Dancing performer take a tragic turn, as she received a cancer diagnosis just one day after returning home from her honeymoon with husband Ben Jones. This shocking revelation brought about a sudden collapse in her world.

2021 proved to be the most challenging year for Amy, aged 34. She experienced a mastectomy, chemotherapy, fertility treatments, and nearly lost her life due to sepsis.

Despite struggling with her health due to cancer, the dancer faced harsh criticisms from skeptics who labeled her as self-centered and attention-seeking, simply because she openly shared her cancer journey on public platforms.

In an exclusive clip from her new BBC documentary seen by TopMob, Amy struggles to control her emotions as she told how tough it was to receive such harsh messages, admitting sometimes she ‘wished she didn’t’ publicly open up to fans.

In this video, we find the Welsh woman lying in her hospital bed, displaying a collection of messages to her cancer nurse. These messages are from internet trolls who criticized her for shaving her head in the garden, labeling her as someone who seeks attention. Others suggested that she should have kept her battle with the disease private.

The nurse explains that those criticizing her are likely individuals who derive pleasure from troubling others, as it seems to be their nature.

In her private reflection, Amy appears deeply moved while reading more of the messages, expressing: “On numerous occasions, I’ve shared my story and often wished I hadn’t.”

In that moment, I found myself feeling incredibly vulnerable, as if all that defined me – my identity – was being peeled back layer by layer.

In all honesty, there’s nothing I wouldn’t give to be dancing with my cherished companions on Strictly, rather than here in my front yard, contemplating the drastic step of shaving my head.

She commented: ‘I wasn’t aware of the result myself. Reading messages like those made it challenging, almost, to face my reflection in the mirror.’

In a segment from the documentary, Amy expressed to the camera: “Anyone battling cancer has enough on their plate without dealing with online bullies too. There’s no manual for handling this situation. It’s tough.”

Drawing from my own experiences, I firmly believe that there is no absolute right or wrong in life; instead, it’s about making choices based on our individual needs and circumstances. As someone who has seen both kindness and cruelty shape people’s lives, I can wholeheartedly say that being kind should be a priority for all of us. If we could each strive to become our best selves, let us aim to embody kindness in every aspect of our lives. Kindness has the power to heal wounds, bridge gaps, and bring light into even the darkest corners. So let’s make a conscious effort to be kind, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because we have seen firsthand its transformative effects on ourselves and others.

On Monday, August 26, Amy’s BBC documentary will be aired, capturing her challenging year as the cameras trail along with her.

After facing harsh criticism, the celebrity is now urging action against internet bullies who labeled her as ‘self-centered and seeking attention’, during a difficult period for her.

As a devoted follower, I admit that in videos obtained by The Mirror, Amy candidly shared: “At times, I’d be awake at 2 am due to the steroids disrupting my sleep. I felt so down and reading those messages was gut-wrenching. It seems like this issue isn’t often discussed.”

Amy advocates that the severest internet bullies should be subjected to criminal penalties, having herself experienced the heartrending impact of online bullying on young lives that can lead to suicide.

She added: ‘When someone is bullying someone online and they take their own life, it’s kind of like manslaughter. Is there going to be punishment to stop people doing it? It’s awful.’

‘They said I was a narcissist and an attention seeker. It was: “It’s not even stage 4.” They said I should hide away and get on with it on my own and asked why I felt the need to dance around in my garden when I shaved my head.’

Following her decision to shave off her hair and performing on Strictly Comes Dancing without a wig, Amy openly acknowledged that she had encountered cruel and derogatory remarks as well.

Despite having the backing of her parents, husband Ben, and her fellow Strictly cast members, the celebrity also confessed that some friends who had attended her wedding drifted away following her diagnosis. This unfortunate event took place only a few months after her wedding with her husband.

Right now, the dancer is gearing up for this season’s Strictly Come Dancing, as she had to pause her participation in the show last year.

Amy has confessed that the thought of losing her job on the BBC dance show was her greatest fear.

Amy Dowden: Fight of My Life airs Monday, August 26 at 8pm on BBC1.
