Amid Liam Payne death probe, singer’s friend and two hotel workers cleared of charges

This week, Argentine judges chose not to pursue charges against two hotel employees and a friend of the late pop sensation Liam Payne, who was once a member of One Direction, in connection with his sudden demise from last year.

As reported by The Times, the appeals court overturned involuntary manslaughter accusations against Rogelio “Roger” Nores and CasaSur Palermo Hotel staff members Gilda Agustina Martín and Esteban Reynaldo Grassi on Wednesday. These charges were issued by Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office in December, following the singer’s death two months prior.

During their probe into Payne’s demise, December saw prosecutors labeling Nores as a stand-in for Payne. They accused him of deserting the singer even though he was aware that Payne was incapable of taking care of himself and had prior knowledge about Payne’s battles with substance abuse.

Through Liam Payne’s own words, as well as conversations with friends and colleagues, it becomes clear that the departed pop icon grappled with addiction amidst the glare of stardom.

Former “X Factor” contestant Payne passed away on October 16, just two weeks after he traveled to Buenos Aires for a concert. He was only 31 years old. It was later revealed that he died from severe injuries sustained during a fall, which caused both internal and external bleeding. A month following his death, authorities disclosed that Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in his system at the time of the accident.

According to Rolling Stone’s reporting, the appeals court judges decided that Nores was neither involved in Payne obtaining or drinking alcohol, nor could he have intervened to stop Payne’s death.

In their decision on Wednesday, the judges stated that Mr. Nores was present at the hotel on multiple occasions and coordinated with staff regarding emergency contact methods. They also mentioned that while it’s uncertain if Mr. Payne could have acquired the quantity of drugs and alcohol that led to his intoxicated state had Mr. Nores been with him, the judges added that it’s not entirely impossible for Mr. Payne to have obtained those substances on his own as well.

As a movie critic, I found myself moved by the poignant gathering that transpired on Wednesday, as Liam Payne’s cherished One Direction bandmates – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik – united with his family to pay their respects at a heartfelt private funeral service.

It’s common for addicts to struggle, even when they are being cared for by family. This was noted by the judges as well. Moreover, an email from Nores to Payne’s team and loved ones in August expressed worries about the singer’s health and his intention to withdraw completely from the scene. This email is significant in Nores’ defamation lawsuit against Geoff Payne, Payne’s father.

Nores told Rolling Stone he was relieved that it’s all done, as he can now journey to the United Kingdom to bid farewell to his cherished friend.

Three individuals, including hotel employees Martin and Grassi, were among five people accused of being linked to Payne’s death. However, judges stated that they could not imagine the actions of these two employees as a significant or responsible cause for homicide. The other two individuals suspected in the singer’s passing – another hotel staff member and a waiter – are still under pretrial detention. They were indicted in December, accused of supplying Payne with narcotics prior to his death.
