American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez episode 7 slows down the story (Recap and review)

As a gamer who’s played through countless narratives, I must say that “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” is giving me a case of the infamous ‘filler episodes’. This seventh installment felt more like a detour than a progression, with the plot taking an unexpected pit stop at Aaron’s feud with Sherrod.

As a devoted viewer, I must express my feelings about the captivating series, “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez.” In episode 7, the narrative takes an unexpected turn as it slows down, delving into events that ultimately culminated in Aaron’s arrest. However, I find myself growing increasingly impatient as we have yet to reach the climax of this tale – the arrest, trial, and tragic end of the esteemed former NFL player.

Haven’t followed the latest developments in the Sports Story? Be warned, there are spoilers! Catch episode 7 of American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez on Hulu from October 22, or tune into a repeat broadcast on FX before continuing to read below.

The gripping series launched by opening scenes featuring Aaron (Josh Andres Rivera) and his companion Sherrod (Roland Buck III) in a car. In a shocking turn of events, Aaron fires at Sherrod’s head, leaving his body outside a warehouse, believing him to be deceased. However, against all odds, Sherrod remarkably recovers, having been hit in an area that allows for a full recovery – albeit losing one eye in the process. Following this incident, he was discharged from the hospital after a brief stay. Needless to say, he is far from content.

Seven episodes down the line, I found myself delving into the events that had led me to take aim at Sherrod. His relentless harassment over the tragic shooting incident was more than I could bear. Desperate for some peace, I made moves to distance myself from him. Unfortunately, my actions were as misguided as ever. Now, Sherrod’s out of the hospital and plotting his revenge. He’s not just threatening me but even considering legal action. In episode 7, “Dirty Pain,” we get an overly detailed account of the lengths I went to in a futile attempt to shake off Sherrod.

Aaron chooses to travel to California for an operation and intends to remain there for a few weeks as he recuperates, with the hope that the situation involving Sherrod will eventually resolve itself. However, the truth is, something as traumatic as getting shot in the eye isn’t easily forgotten. Upon his return home, Aaron enhances his security measures, but it’s clear that they won’t be sufficient protection.

It turns out that Sherrod isn’t the sole issue Aaron must confront; he’s also resorting to drug use again following his surgery, which only adds to his problems. This situation leads him to contact Chris (Jake Cannavale) and they arrange a meeting where they talk and engage in intimacy. However, upon returning home, Aaron is filled with remorse, leading to an argument with Shayanna (Jaylen Barron).

In summary, this installment didn’t seem to add much new information to us. It felt like there were numerous opportunities for deeper exploration that could have been pursued instead, while skipping over certain events in this episode. We are left with only three episodes remaining, and there is a significant amount of ground to cover – the arrest, trial, and ultimately the demise of Aaron Hernandez. Here’s hoping they won’t rush through these important events.
