One actor from Max’s show is attempting to catch the notice of director Luca Guadagnino for his planned revamp of American Psycho. Patrick Schwarzenegger, known for his role as Saxon Ratliff in The White Lotus, expressed his desire on social media to land the lead role in the upcoming American Psycho remake. Originally released in 2000 and starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, the film is now being reimagined.

On a popular social media site, Schwarzenegger responded to a user’s inquiry about whether portraying the legendary Patrick Bateman character might serve as his breakthrough role. Schwarzenegger expressed, “I couldn’t be more eager for that opportunity.

The Reboot Was Announced Last Fall

In October 2024, it became public knowledge that Guadagnino, who was behind the 2024 movie “Challengers,” intended to reimagine the film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel “American Psycho.” This original novel later inspired the 2000 Christian Bale film, where Bale portrayed Patrick Bateman, a New York City banker displaying signs of psychopathy.

Back when they unveiled this intriguing project, I couldn’t help but feel my heart skip a beat and share the news with an excited “Finally, my dream!” Now, even before the reboot was officially announced, there I was, striking a pose reminiscent of Patrick Bateman in a Vanity Fair photoshoot, harking back to the iconic films from the early 2000s. It’s safe to say, this project is personal for me!

Austin Butler in the Lead?

So far, there has been no update regarding who will take on the role of Bateman in the remake. Initially, Austin Butler, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in Elvis, was a strong contender, but the original American Psycho’s casting director has stated that…

As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: “I believe Austin would be the ideal choice for the role Jared Leto played, given his striking good looks – just as we chose Jared for the same reason.” In the original film, Leto portrayed Paul Allen, a banker. “Jared is undeniably a talented actor, and Austin certainly possesses deep acting abilities too,” Kerry Barden added. However, he emphasized that not everyone has that kind of striking beauty.

In a prior conversation, Schwarzenegger expressed that he’s eager to discover the perfect project following his latest venture. If it does, it would likely be the most demanding and testing experience of his life, both personally and professionally.

Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” hasn’t been scheduled for release yet. The initial 2000 movie can be found streaming on Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.
